Laguna, wrong place, urgent question!

Post by Guru Meditation »

Good morning,
I have a quick question that I would appreciate an answer on asap if anybody knows, the sooner I know the better, thanks! I put the question here to attract more attention, possibly it can be moved to the Renault forum later if the mods don't mind.
How much work is involved in changing the bottom/back engine mount on a '98 R 1.8 8v Mk1 Renaul Laguna? I need to know to judge if a garage bill is reasonable or not (not a main dealer or even a Renault specialist). I don't have the car to hand to look or the Haynes although the Haynes is junk for this sort of information anyway.
If anybody knows then an answer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Laguna 1.8 RT Sport (dont make me laff)
Before it went off to the great salvage yard in the sky had to remove the top mount to change cam belt (fiddly and NO markings). Top mount easy, bottom mount didnt look that bad either, but its time like anything.. with garages charging £40 per hour even a small job can become chingey. took me 5 hours to remove and refit top mount and timing belt, so could be an expensive job, plus do they have to remove any other bits of engine? Petrol tank staraps also prone to going rotten and breaking, get a rusted nut and we are talking £60 plus straps (£12 each)

Thanks for your help-it is my Laguna, it's a 1.8 8v RT, not the sport one-I agree, it has a pretty cr@p engine. It's got a reasonable slug of torque (for a petrol) and refinement between 2-3k but after that it's a bit rough and the car is damn slow although I like it other than that-steering feel good, not as good as my ZX but good, comfy, supportive seats, huge boot, nice cabin (matter of opinion), good driving position, brakes (ahhh...I have brakes-compared to my ZX TD) are good, ride is good blah blah. I think the worst thing about the Laguna is it's reliability problems-gear boxes fail, heater matrices (sp?) fail, power steering fails.
Well it turned out to be the bottom engine mount, cost me £127 all in which I think is on the pricey side for an engine mount-although to be fair that price also includes the investigation as I wasn't certain so I asked them to check it out and replace if necessary. When I dropped the car off and described the fault the guy reckoned it was the clutch, I reckoned it was the mount, so he was honest in that respect. Also after he found the mount he said £130-140 but the final bill was £127-could of easily made it £140 so it sounds ok to me in the end.
I took it to the garage as I couldn't be bothered to look myself with axle stands etc and definately couldn't be bothered to struggle with the mount-that alone was worth paying £90 for-thought of it brings flashbacks to me when I tackled the rear subframe mounts on my ZX single handed, that job sucked![B)]
Thanks very much for the reply, mods maybe this can be moved to the Renault section.
