XM central locking (or not)!

Friend of mine has an xm j reg, every time he uses the plip to lock the car it takes eight tries before it locks it, could this be the relay giving up?

Bad batteries in plip?
Broken circuit board tracks around press button (plip)? (fine soldering iron)
Corroded connectors in roof receptor unit? (remove interior light to check)
Too far from car/bad aiming (optical remote)?
Door contacts not indicating all doors closed? (bad earthing)
Microswitch(es) on one of the door lock mechanisms playing up? (not fun!)
These are the usual XM central locking problems.

Thanks nisk, friend showed me tonight that he can lock doors after eight tries either by key or by plip but when he goes to open drivers door with the key only that door unlocks, strange to say the least!
obviously not the relay, but who knows?
