ZX Suspension

Post by shezads »

My zx Volcane TD has developed a bit of roll in the corners - and the suspension seems soft to me in comparison to when I bought the car (two years ago). I have covered about 24000 miles since (mileage 99000 now).
At first I thought it was just my imagination - but now that it requires wishbones (slight knocking sound from front when going over bumps), I was planning on replacing the dampers also (probably original ones that have not been changed).
I tried bouncing the corner of the car, to test the dampers - but does not reaaly fail this test, - but I think I'll replace anyway.
I have a few questions:
1) In the GSF catalog - it lists the dampers for the 1.9/2.0/19td. I know that the volcane had different dampers (I'am guessing firmer)- so is the above listing for the volcane - I don't want to lose the handling by putting the normal suspension in - would ruin the handling imo.
2) The catalog does not list different wishbones for the volcane - or even the td. I would have thought that the wishbones would be sturdier for the td- especially the volcane?
3) I am assuming the sachs are higher spec, so I'll be looking at these (oil filled or gas filled - I don't remember).
4)Do I need to change the springs, if so which ones and where to buy from? These are not listed in the catalog!! (Volcane td ones should be different I assume - lower, stiffer).
Plus would changing the wishbones effect the roll in the corners - should I get these done first?
P.s. - Should I use this opportunity to upgrade suspension - if so which ones are best, what spec and where are they available from?

Quick reply to these points
1)Dampers for ZX TD Volcane are in fact N45552 and N45554 (same as Berlingo 800kg!)catalogue is not correct here.
2) ZX Arms are all the same apart from 2.0 16v. Its normal to simply change the small front bush and the big P bush at the rear. The arm itself should be fine.
3)The dampers mentioned above are Sachs Boge.
4)I would not think theres anything wrong with the springs. In 9 years here no customer has ever asked me for replacement ZX springs.

Hi, are the Sachs gas filled? (I heard these are give sportier handling compared to the oil filled ones).
Also I assume by changing the dampers - I will get rid of the body roll (comparative to when I first got the car) problem I seem to be having.
I may also look intoo the poly bushes (on another thread)- have emailed powerflex - no repsonse of yet.

is it possible to change the front bushes without specialist tools? I have just been told it's an MOT failure

Theres some information with pictures on the powerflex website (www.powerflex.co.uk) looks fairly easy to do - may need to drill the old bushes out.

The Dampers are for absorbing and controlling the rate of a bump/shock, giving a controlled motion, not bouncing like a Jack in a box.
They will not help in a roll control, only stiffer spring or torsion bar rates or anti-roll bars.
So by fitting sporty Dampers will not reduce the roll only a better control during a rebound when you hit a Bump.

poly bushes are ok if you want a trip to the dentist to have your filings replaced every couple of weeks!! lol !! the wishbone bushes can be replaced without special tools. A good chizel and hammer, mayby a angle grinder as well. A vice to press the new bushes in
