The last time I ignore a rattle!

Post by MW »

On holiday in France with the Xantia (100K), and we got a tinkly ringing rattle on left hand bends, just as if we had a pebble inside the wheel.
It can't be much, I said, this car's got a brand new MOT from a garage that I utterly trust. It's probably just a small stone, it'll find its own way out.
A couple of days later it was still there, so I took it down to the village mechanic. It took him a while to find the problem as well. One of the two bolts that secure the rear offside caliper to the swinging arm had sheared off, and the ringing noise we were hearing was the loose end of the broken bolt sliding outwards on left-hand bends and colliding with the inside surface of the wheel!
Jeez, it could have locked the wheel at any moment. The mechanic drilled out the bolt, replaced it, and charged us 20 euros, which isn't a lot of money. He seemed genunely embarrassed at how grateful I was.
My regular garage says this happens sometimes on Xants and BXs. Now that I'm back home I'm replacing all four of my bolts, just to be on the safe side.

I wonder whether this is an extension of the corrosion under rear brake calipers.
Eventually the corrosion under the caliper gets so bad it snaps the bolts.

You should always investigate any odd noise. My old fiesta was making a weird blurting sound on acceleration, so like a fool i ignored it and two days later it shed its entire exhaust system across the A38 near derby...

Investigating noises is worth-while. A few weeks ago I'd noticed my ZX power delivery had started to feel a little coarser and the pas/alternator belt was slipping on full lock...all accompanied by a metallic rattling. A quick check and inspection revealed a bolt from the pas pump had undone itself and was rolling inside the pas pulley [:0]
When I took my car to my local Cit specialist, he told me I'd only got one bolt holding my PAS pump in instead of three [B)]. I'll investigate every rattle I hear from now on [:)]
