Xantia CV joints

Post by surfer »

Hi,
Haynes manual is quite vague, so could anybody tell me if the outer CV joints on a Xantia can be replaced? Or do you have to do the whole driveshaft?
It's a '96 Activa by the way.
Thanks,
Simon.

Simon -
It's quite easy to remove the outer CV joint - from the removed axle [:p]
Honestly - complete recon axles are now that cheap, it's not worth bothering with the CV alone [;)]

That's right - you'll probably get a recon, exchange driveshaft for less money than what you'll spend on a CV joint, grease and new gaiter + hastle.

the n/s one can be done by taking out the hub end but you'll probaly end up with a litre of gear oil on the floor cause it slides out easy but for some reason i think the o/s one needs pulling in half, something to do with how the bearings are attached to the shaft.

O/s Driveshaft has an intermediate bearing located in a housing bolted to the back of the cylinder block, the bearing is retained by two bolts which have off set heads. to remove shft you need to loosen the two bolts and then turn them through 90 deg the whole shaft will then come out from the gearbox as per the N/s shaft after going through the same hub disconnection process. If you do remove it check the condition of the intermediate bearing which will come out with the shaft. If the bearing is worn it can fool you (and MOT testers) into believing that your front wheel bearing is U/S and or that you have a noisy gearbox

Thanks all.
Driveshaft it is then.
Will probably have to replace that intermediate bearing anyway...there is a fair amount of vibration coming through the steering wheel, and it's beginning to get noisy too.
Regards,
Simon.

If you go for an exchange, recon shaft, you'll get the new intermediate bearing already fitted.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I have my offside shaft in a vice and I just can't get the outer hint off! Any ideas?

Tim,

The CV joint is only secured by a snap Circlip.. A good sharp HIT with a hammer should remove it from the shaft!

What bad luck. Have you got a replacment handy??

No, I'm ordering one from the net for £20, no idea when it will arrive though and I need the car for work.

I was knocking it for an hour, eventually smashing the cage through frustration. Even after I took it apart the joint wouldn't come off, I had to beat the shaft with a hammer from the "inside" of the joint, eventually the circlip broke!
