the clutches of the Hdi

Post by jono »

So it's looking like the darling clutch on my wifes '99 hdi is about to expire at only 99658 miles! Still thats better mileage than the information in the Honest John column in the telegraph. However the question is, does anybody have an idea of how much an independant citroen garage would charge. I,ve got to get some idea before the telephoning starts.
Thanks

Mine wore out at 65000! The previous owner obviously didn't take care of it but that's the chance one takes.
Living near Southampton, I used the Curbridge Motor Co Ltd. Total cost was £470 which included an LHM change. I was well pleased by that price and they did a good job. They specialise in Peugeot and Citroens, know their stuff and have been praised by others here. He used a GSF clutch so it'll be a goodun!
I should add that this is for the 110 version as the clutch is more expensive that the 90.

So I thought I would start the phoning around for prices. Phoned the local main agent just for a laugh, I get through to the service counter, talk to the chap about Xantia clutches and then whether the clutch is cable or hydraulic operated. Told the chap the vehicle age, 1999, he confirs with someone and confirms it has an hydraulic operated clutch. I then asked where the is master cylinder. Even with a sealed for life system there has to be a master cylinder of some sort. 'I don't know' he said 'but the clutch fluid comes from the same reservoir as the brakes'. 'That will be the main LHM reservior' I said 'which also feeds the suspension and steering thats clever get a leaking clutch and potentially lose everything '. 'No, there is a seperate brakes/clutch reservior'. 'What on a Xantia'. 'Yes'. I thanked him for his time. I didn't bother to ask how much to change a clutch I didn't want him looking up a Scammel price list. If he didn't know he should have said so, but to impart such rubbish!!!!
If this is the best a main dealer can do they don't deserve to be in business, or charge super inflated prices when the face off to the customer is so basically c--p. Give me a specilised indpendant every time.
