BX Turbo Roto diesel pump seal

Post by bernie »

The oil seal on the shaft to cam wheel appears to be leaking diesel.[}:)][}:)]
Does anyone know if it's available as a spare part?

Diesel pumps are fine pieces of engineering made to close tolerances. As a result they are very repairable as well and I'm sure that a seal is obtainable, probably from a diesel specialist. Its worth checking with a specialist as the cost of him doing it may not be unreasonable.

I have seen roto pumps spit out the front seal completely, why not upgrade to the bosch pump? I seem to recall that the roto parts come as a complete kit and the bosch parts are available separately, though it might be the other way round!

Hi Bernie,
If it's any help I have changed the shaft oil seal twice on the Lucas pump on the Visa Diesel.
Seal was available seperately from a Lucas outlet in Cambridge.
Rust builds up on the exposed part of the shaft, so this needs to be carefully removed with fine wet and dry soaked in diesel. If I remember it was quite tight to get into the recess.
Do not lubricate the outer circumferance of the new seal, only the shaft.
Good luck.

Thanks for your advise Stewart and Brian, I'll try and get a seal tomorrow.
As to changing to Bosch, I have a pump and injectors from a Pug 405 TD I may use if neccessary.

The bosch pump is better, why not fit it anyway?

Allegedly better quality, reliability,Tuning etc the Bosch is generally the preferred option, given the job you must do theres really nothing in it, if you look at the ally casting that the pump sits on you will see that there are two sets of stud holes, merely swap the studs into the other set of holed and pop the Bosch unit on, you may have to faff around with the timing a bit, as you have the bosch pump anyway why not?

Don't swap the pumps - repair the original and preferably get a Lucas diesel specialist to check the drive end bush clearance in the pump - this is replaceable.
Pumps are set and calibrated for each individual engine application - in view of my "handle" I won't be drawn into the respective virtues of Lucas and Bosch pumps. Suffice to say that either will outlast an engine if properly treated - clean fuel and correct cambelt tension.

Hi again Bernie,
Absolutely no axe to gring on either pump manufacturer, but I must add the the front bearing on the Lucas pump started to break up and the pump was acelerating on it's own, scarey,(I must take that one apart completely, just out of curiosity), so I obtained the other make complete with injectors from a breakers...
Cheers
