Always check the waterpump gasket too, as you can get air coming into the system here too.... :)

does that mean the 406 V6 was fine then? ie not the head gasket but a dead pump? How nice if thats all!

Hi mate,
The 406 was actualy a broken pipe I havent got it in the xantia yet but depending on how long the engine was run for with a broken water pipe will make a diference with its life expectancy... Still a 406 V6 with a chipped ECU wasnt bad for £500!
The car with the leaking pump went through 2 users of this forum and my self befor my dad after buying it found that the pump was leaking. after replacing the pump today all is good and the car now has no air leak!
