It's the cable; possibly snapped just behind the firewall.
There is 2 types of clutch cable, one for the Diesels and 16Vs and the other for the rest. Yours should be the one for the rest if it's petrol.
If you goto the on-line shop on this site, it will give you part number and price.
Naturally the one for the 19TZi/Tri is cheaper than the Diesel/16V one; it's also a lot easier to instal.[;)]

Could be the actuating arm on top of the gearbox.
Sounds like it has cracked and allowed the pushrod to fall to the floor.[V][:(]
Can be repair welded or later ones have a stiffening rod welded on.[:)]

Haven't done a diesel as we don't get them out here due to our diesel being of the quality that won't kill weeds let alone run an engine, but we recently did one on a 16V.
I ended up almost in a wheelchair (literally) and the son who did it was constantly chastised by his mother for the number and variety of 4 letter words used in the process.[V]
I don't think there's any such thing as a shortcut.
Ideally, rip out the front drivers seat and then the pedal box. Connect the engine to an engine hoist and disconnect the mounts so that it can be tossed around to gain access and pull the battery out. I know it sounds a big drama but hard as it may seem to believe, this is one job that is best tackled as a major project.
After we'd done the job, a guy posted a story about a specialist charging 5 hours to fit one & my son who fitted it and is used to working on all kinds of 'orrible things such as XJS Jaguar race cars commented that "if I could get someone to do one in 5 hours, I'd be happy to pay him to do it."
On the petrol 1.9 it's apparently a 2 hour job but I'm led to believe on a diesel it's almost as bad as a 16V.

Its well worth checking the bell crank lever on the gearbox end of the cable, they are prone to breaking and will give the same symptoms, at least you found the pushrod;)If it is the cable then remember to remove the big panel from underneath the steering column, at least you will be able to almost see some of what you are doing.
