110 or 90

Post by user_3150 »

How the heck do I know which engine i've got. The V5 doesn't say Citroen can't say searching there database other than it's a HDi diesel. It must have some easy visual clues. I'm starting to find out about Citroen ownership, but don't worry I owned a Fiat before so I'm well broken in HEHE. Oh yes it's a 2000 W estate.

As wheeler or try a different Citroen Dealer, one that has a clue.

Now this is the confusing part. My chassis plate says RHY but GSF don't list a HDi estate 90 bhp. Also does the intercooler look like a small radiator? I need to get to the bottom of this as it's gonna effect my insurance as well I suppose. This has all started since I tried to order some front brake disk's.

Yes,it looks like a radiator.Sometimes big as a rad(like mine)or smaller.Proberly black or silver/aluminium in color.Mounted where it can get good air flow.Should have 2 pipes(larger than radiator pipes)coming off it leading to turbo.

I`m sure thats right,as both my dad & Step dad have had 406`s with the hdi engine,90`s & 110`s,the 110`s having an intercooler, whereas the 90`s just have a empty space & less pipe work.I think the only other difference in power is the engine management system, being different on both engines.

if it has an RHY engine code then it should be a 90 bhp & thats what it left the factory with.

GUTTED it IS the 90bhp. I was under the impression it was a 110 but all the things you suggested are totally correct RHY chassis code no Intercooler. What a Bummer but still it goes alright. And at least my brakes will be cheaper!!

You could always have a Van Aaken smart box fitted. That will give you 110bhp.

you could have the smart box fitted AND also fit an intercooler yourself.... 125bhp ish??or maybe a bit more...! i know by fitting a alloy front mounted intercooler to a ZX instead of the top mounted standard intercooler power is increased approx. 20bhp, intercoolers make a big difference
Dan
p.s. there was a C5 intercooler on ebay with pipework for i t hink 34 quid last month!

The 90 Bhp and 110 Bhp engines are not actually identical, the crankshafts are different parts for a start.

Allard Turbo Sport can intercool and chip the 110 to 150bhp, or the hdi90 to 135bhp. If your after anything thats what you want to do.
They'll chip and intercool the 90 to 137bhp! But if the two engines are the essentially the same, I see no reason why the hdi90 can't be pursuaded to develop the 150bhp either. Even the chipped and intercooled hdi90 develops some huge amount of mid-range torque (200lbft+), which is what a diesel is all about!
I think the mod is well worth the 700 odd quid it costs for driveability and torque alone!
Diesels were so poor and sluggish with no intercoolers, the early td's were just not that good. I can't believe Peugeot even bothered with the 90, if the 110 is simply the same engine with an intercooler. Cheap skates!
I'd try get the ecu and intercooler/piping from a 110 at a scrapper for 100 quid. Voila hdi110 for bugger all!

Would this be a easy DIY job? Or has anyone done this before?
