heavy grease

Post by tomsheppard »

A little tip for those of you with sloppy gear linkages. To make a much thicker grease to stop things from flopping around, add a few drops of washing up liquid to the grease and mix well. You end up with a soap thickened lubricant.

Are you sure it ain't grease thickened soap? and does it come out of your white wash easier?

Its probably a bit water soluble and will most likely attack the rubber bushes.
If you want a proper waterproof thick grease you can get something a bit more like bitumin than grease (sticky tarry stuff) called wire rope grease, thats both waterproof and thick. I have gone on a bit about waterproof greases but the simple truth about them is you apply them once and they stay put i.e. no wash off or drying up.

Washing up liquid gets its "thickness" by containing heavy salt additives. Do you really want it to use it?
As an aside you should bever use it for washing cars. Just as it strips grease off plates, it strips a car of its protective wax, and then any bare metal, it corrodes like wildfire.
I had an old triumph whose owner always used Washing up liquid in the washer bottle. Open up the bonnet & all the drip channels had vanished completely.

These lubricants are used extensively in the aircraft industry. The grease protects against corrosion.
