Xantia

Post by tonka »

Hi
require assistance with my 1.9td 2000 plate Xantia
I have just purchased the car and have a few problems. First pump grumbles when more than half a turn of steering wheel, is this normal.
I have a whine on gearbox which the garage tells me is normal (at only 45000 miles I think not?)
Also after 40 miles the steering becomes notchy, the brakes feel odd and when I brake hard the car nose dives, the car is still under warrenty with garage but they are trying to say this is normal.
I am new to citroen but this can not be normal can it???????
Please help me!!

None of this sounds normal at all. I've not heard of a Xantia gearbox giving up, even at 200,000 miles plus. A little noisy on the overrun, perhaps, but not whining.
Take it to an independant citroen specialist for another opinion - sounds like a common hydraulics problem to me, but what, i'm not sure.

Brakes, steering and suspension are all run off one common hydraulic system. It sounds like your Xantia is losing its pressure.
Could this be.. regulator fault ? ball bearing on the main accumulator.. give it a poke to free it ?
Low LHM fluid level in the reservoir ?
Air leak on hydraulic pump intake pipe ? ..from LHM reservoir to pump..known to go hard and crack with time so letting air into the pump.
Sounds like a problem the guys on this forum should be able to sort out. I'm sure an answer is on its way. Hold tight tonka..
The gearbox whine will not be related to the hydraulics. Maybe check the gearbox oil level.. or replace the gearbox oil.. or add a friction reducing additive like Slick50 ?

Many thanks for reply.
Have checked LHM level which is good.
Checked filters very bad, both covered with black scum, rubber, also metal particles. So looks like my pumps dying.
All faults much improved after filter clean, no surprise.
Am going to give the garage hell this morning will post results.[}:)]
Many thanks again

If the filters are blocked up, then the poor old pump won't get a chance. Metal particles don't sound good, though. I'd take it back and demand a refund...
