fan comes on turning ignition

Post by stressed Tom »

i have a N plate citroen xantia estate 1.9TD.
When i turn on the ignition the fan comes on straight away and is very noisy. i drive the car and it goes fine. the fan seems to switch itself on and off all the time even if there is no change in temperature, does anyone think this has anything to do with the stop light that comes on the dash saying the engine is too hot when infact it isnt!
greatful for any replys

I've had this fault on a 97 TD. It was diagnosed as a fault in the Bitron box which controls the fans, certainly in cars with air con.
There are plenty of threads covering this unit on the forum. Do a search for Bitron. The stop light and the fans are part of one problem where the Bitron box thinks the temperature is too high.

It could also be the temperature sensor or the wiring between it and the bitron unit. Make sure that all the wiring connections / joints are clean and free from corrosion...
