Oil filters
With a 205, a Xantia, a Saxo and a 306 in the family fleet, I usually buy N12045 oil filters six at a time. Now we've added a Xsara HDI that takes a filter with a different part number. But comparing the two filters side by side, diameter and length are the same, as is the screw thread. So what's the difference?

Um, OK
The old faithful oil filter which fitted pretty much everything was our old friend the 1109N3 or GSF N12045, which does all TU and XU engines.
The HDi and DW8 uses a 1109T1 or GSF N12048. This is a "long life" oil filter and is designed for longer service intervals if used with semi or fully synthetic oil. In practice, as everything seems to be the same the later 1109T1 can be fitted to earlier XU/XUD engines. I run this later filter om my ZX TD with Total Q7000 semi synthetic and have stretched the service intervals from 6000 to 10000 miles, because basically I am too busy driving it to change the oil and filter every six weeks. I've done 42K on this "incorrect" filter so far and used no oil.
In my defence of using the later filter, Peugeot decreed that from 6/99 onwards all TU and XU engines using the 1109N3 superceded to the later filter if semi or fully synthetic oils was used so I sleep easy in my bed of a night.
