A bit tricky with Autoboxes, as the torque converter can munch up quite a bit, or even be a bit "lazy" giving slow symptoms. If both cars will make the same speed, then the power outputs are pretty evenly matched. I'd say check/change the gearbox oil, or even get the 'box serviced; should be less than a Citroen 6k service for a thorough filter/oil change/adjustment by a decent Autobox specialist.
Slow Avantage? Or fast Aura? SORTED.

Hi Phil, I had that done about 4 months ago when I did the brake swop etc, I had every fluid and filter replaced, based on spec's and info supplied by "arry-b" (thanks again arry).. [^] (not done much milage since then, only 1,500 ish)...
Volcaneoptimist. Thanks for the link and info. Based on that, I think the difference is more likely to show up in miles per gallon than in miles per hour. [:D]

First job today was to change the back exhaust box. And when taken off it weighed a ton!! Bashed it around a bit (it was in reasonable-to-good condition really) and loads of rock hard black carbon and rust came out! [:0] [8)]
Then took it for a quick spin and it was a LOT better, so the exhaust flow had been a bit restricted. Took it back to the garage intending to run some tests but unfortunately a car came in with serious brake problems, so I had to postponed things till wednesday when the ramp looks to be available for the afternoon.
I think the semi blocked exaust box was causing most, if not all, of the problems though. [?] At a guess I would say the exhaust allowed enough flow under slow exceleration, but couldn't cope with hard sudden exceleration in the lower gears..

A totally fascinating thread! I really wouldn't have believed that a dodgy exhaust could have provoked such a noticeable drop in power. Not often that you get the opportunity to test like for like. I must admit that if I'd changed my exhaust and thought that the car felt better for it, I'd have said it was probably psychological. I now know differently!!

As you say the Avantage is a lot better now... But.. it still changes gear too soon, so I still have more tests and adjustments to make before it can catch that pesky Aura..
I intend to disconnect the throttle cable and tie the pump end up high and try to get a lot of lubricant down it.. And may do the same to the other two cables attached to the pump as well, just to be sure nothing is hampering the pumps operation in any way. [:o)]
After that I am going to look into - compare the adjustments on the cables to the gearboxes. As, held in gear, I can keep up with the Aura now, but left to its own devices the Avantage changes up too soon and still gets left behind in 1st and 2nd gears... [:I]
Though I dont actually know what determines the point at which the gears decide to change? I am only assuming its cable controlled [?] The kick-down works fine, and that IS cable controlled..
Any other ideas and/or information would be very welcome.. [:)]

Well the problem is finaly sorted [:D] .. On the ZX 1.9D engine, the throttle adjustment is made by a series of slots on the end of the outer cable, a sort of spring clip goes into one of these slots/grooves to prevent the outer case moving.
In my case the spring clip had grown tired and loose. As a result of this, the spring had managed to 'work back' two slots, this not only gave the pedal more free movement, it also prevented the pump arm being pulled fully back due to the excess slack in the cable! So maybe throttle was no longer being opened fully, although the max speed was unafected..
Having squashed the spring clip up to make it a tight fit, I took up all the play in the cable and replaced it. The results were quite dramatic! [8)] Not only is the car far more responsive, it holds it gears almost into the red zone if you shove your foot right to the floor as the kickdown cable is also affected by the lever movement on the pump. As the front of the pump lever is pulled to the right by the pedal movement, so the rear of the lever moves to the left and pulls on the auto box cable. [:)]
I think the clip was able to move from slot to slot because it had worn two flat spots on the outer cable rings due to it becoming such a loose fit. [:0]
