ticking noise - as pulling away

Post by PicassoPigeon »

My Xantia has started to make a ticking noise just as i pull away, it only does it at 1100 - 1200 rpm and then stops then returns when you change gear and the revs drop back down.
You can make it do it at the lights with the handbrake on, only with it in gear just as you bounce the car with the clutch and give it some gas then tick tick tick.
thanks for your help. gav425

The car is still doing this but it works ok so cant be anything too bad. (I hope!)[:D]
It does annoy me somewhat and people keep looking at me as i drive around, wish i could stop it.

You definately have some kind of a mechanical problem.
Either you have to get your hands dirty - or you pay a garage !
I'm pretty sure it would be the main accumulator sphere, which is the green ball located down on the engine block.
It must be replaced, as it's gone flat of it's precharged gas.
It's VERY important for the brakes function, in fact you wont know when, until it's too late [:0]
Take my advice : start being serious on strange sounds/symptoms from your car - or stop driving cars [8]
- before you kill other trafficants [:0]

Is the replacing of this bad or fairly easy?
I have a local GSF so can pop out to get one, only around the corner.
I thought it would have been something to do with the clutch as it ticks as you pull away. The Accu does not tick much when just stoped still. Still to be on the safe side and for only £20 for new one lets go for it and see how we do.
Lots of info on here for doing the swap over so will let you know how i get on, Thanks for the warning Anders!! [:I]

If you can get it to do it whilst stopped, then you can check if its the sphere by lowering the suspension to its lowest service mode and then do whatever you do to see if it will happen, if it doesnt then it is definatly the sphere,
If it does still happen then it could be the cam belt stretching as you rev the engine and about to fail which is very expensive if it snaps !

As Mosser says, it could well be your cambelt going-when was it last done? I say this because I had an Escort many years ago with exactly the same symptoms. It was a company car, and as it was a firms car I just drove it around with ticking noises as it pulled away until it came up for service- they looked at the belt and it was on the verge of disintegrating- they don't all just snap with no warning!
New belt=no more ticking, although I would never have thought from the sound that it was anything to do with the belt, apparently the noise was very light contact between the valves and pistons as the belt was stretching back and forth and changing the valve timing slightly.

it only makes the noise when in gear. if i sit with the revs at 1100rpm then no noise but put it in 1st gear and hold it on the clutch at 1100rpm you get the noise.
thanks,

Ok car will be going in to have cam belt done, what also should be done at the same time?
The belt was last changed May 2002, 6 months before i got the car, but i dont know about the water pump. Should i just get them to do the water pump as well is there anything else to change now to make it all ok for a few years.
Thanks.
