TEC Info CD's on Ebay?

Post by philhoward »

There's a glut of them on there, all around a fiver. Are they any good? Was tempted as they claim to cover all Hydro cits, even the multiplex wiring on a C5!
Anyone bought one yet? Anyone fancy going halves?

I was thinking of bidding for one of these discs, but there is some negative feedback about them, one person says these files are freely available on the net and there is only 632kb of information on the CD, less than half of one floppy disc, so I think I will give it a miss.

The guy was selling the PDF files on boosting a couple of months ago, these are freely available too, perhaps we should buy one and distribute it via the forum?

Or tip the nod to eBay - he certainly doesn't own the copyright for what he's selling....

http://www.tramontana.co.hu/citroen/citroen%20guide.pdf
...is well worth a look.
Its just over 600 kb, so takes a couple of minutes to download if you're on dialup.
I noticed the CD's on ebay, and wondered if was actually this PDF file that was on them?

Already got that Bible...sods law says it probably is! Not worth paying a fiver for something thats freely available. If it's mixed with other bits (like the BX-DIY guide) and a few other online resources, then it's no better than the info i've already got.
As far as copyright goes, if it's the online bibles we already look at, then there are a few cases of people reproducing stuff on the net with cloudy copyright issues, as (theoretically) the internet doesn't actually belong to anyone, so how could any one person be prosecuted? There are more legal arguments to and fro; don't want to go there!
Perhaps I was wishing that it might be a (breach of copyright) gen Citroen Workshop manual type thing...

I took the plunge and won a bid for a CD that purports to have Workshop Manuals that cover
DS, ID, CX, GS, GSA, BX, XM, XANTIA, XSARA, AND THE C5.
It claimed that one could print off the pages necessary to do a job and not worry about getting them oily.
When (if) I get the CD then I'll report back.

Is it one of these?;

If so, the contents list is almost identical to that on the PDF file link that I posted above [:(]

It's not the same and in fact it says very little. That can be interpreted either way. I suspect though that you are right as it does not include the ZX. If it does turn out to be the PDF I can assure you that I will be requesting my money back and if that fails then I shall report him to eBay.

Just to clarify what I said above - I'm not saying "copying is bad" - I'm as keen as anyone to get my hands on technical or other useful info.
However it just stinks as far as I'm concerned if somebody sells on purely for profit a "secondhand" scanned item, or something already in the public domain.

Below is a message posted on the Yahoo groups from Gabor Deak Jahn to is the co-author of some of the works mentioned which is available on the net. I reproduce his message in full. Thanks for reading this.
Hello,
I wanted to wait with this announcement and warning until I receive the
official reply of e-Bay to my notification but new items have appeared on
e-Bay and that forces me to warn you so that you won't be cheated. Copies of
the Citroën Technical Guide, written by Zeljko Nastasic and myself, are
offered on e-Bay, without, needless to say, our prior knowledge or consent.
The Guide remains, as it always has been, free for download from my site.
A link to a current offer, still visible as of now is:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... gory=48439
I know of at least one case where an unsuspecting buyer was cheated into
bidding and paying for the CD. The seller was apparently different from the
one in the previous link and the description was also slightly different.
Technically speaking, I can't determine if this one advertised is the same
as the one already sold (which was definitely our PDF) but the table of
contents listed on the page is very much similar to ours, actually, it is of
a previous version of our Guide, not the currently available one.
I also prepared a new version of the Guide, with a clear copyright statement
expressly prohibiting such behavior. I know it was an oversight on our part
to omit it in the first place (although I don't think a mere statement would
keep anybody from cheating) but we never intended to place any copyright
restrictions on this material, always meaning to benefit our small
community, so we didn't think about it earlier.
Although people downloading the Guide are asked on my page to not to store
it for others to download but to provide a link instead, I know that some of
you have made it available for others to download or have put in on CD for
distribution. I'd like to ask you that, if you can't comply with our request
to only provide a link for whatever reason, to download the latest copy with
the copyright statement included.
I subscribe to the Xantia-L, BX-L, CX-L, XM-L, C5-L, AX-L, Citroen-L lists,
so this warning will be sent to all of them. I'd like to ask you frequenting
other lists, either here on Yahoo! Groups or others around the world, to
help spread the word so that, hopefully, nobody will bid and pay for what is
available for free.
Bye,
Gábor

DON'T! I didn't want to bring it up yet because I'm waiting for the official
reply of e-Bay to my notification but as it seems to be offered in more than
one case and the danger is imminent, I have to warn you. The PDF in question
is, without doubt (just compare the table of contents), the Citroën
Technical Guide written by Zeljko Nastasic and myself, always available for
download from my web site, for free, of course, as before. A Citroënthusiast
friend has been lured into bidding for one and he brought it to my attention.
I'd like to ask those of you who frequent other mailing lists (not these few
ones, I'll post warnings there myself), of other countries or languages, to
help spread the word so that, hopefully, nobody will bid and pay for what is
available for free.
Bye,
Gábor
