XM Clattery Diesel

Post by sdabel »

My 2.1 TD sounds way too clattery to me, I suspect the diesel injectors may need work. Is this a replacement job or can they be serviced ? There is no mention in the service history of any previous work on the injectors.
Car has done 133,000 miles (and auto seems fine, tempting fate)[:D]

Th einjectors on my '93 XM TD12 havn't been touched since new (512 000 km ago!) and they don't give rise to any clatter. The usual cause of clatter on this engine is the hydraulic valve lifters, but they usually quieten down once you rev the engine a bit. At 133 kmiles I'd have a serious look at the cambelt/tensioners, unless you have some rock solid proof that they've been changed recently. I busted cambelt is goodbye engine on these motors, I'm afraid. What worries me is that the only occurance I have had of a clattery engine was when I got the cambelt timing one tooth out on the cam drive, sounded like a chafe cutter!

sean,
I'll refrain from diagnosing your problem unless you could better describe the noise and relate it to some other rotating frequency (eg cam speed or crank speed). However, to answer your question about the injectors, yes they can be serviced/repaired.
I had mine on my 2.5TD serviced by replacing the nozzles. A local independent who specialises in diesels did it for me. The injector nozzles were £19 each fitted and tested. The indy is called Paragon Diesels and is in Denny in Scotland. The guy's name is Gordon. I'm sure he'd do it by post if you sent him the injectors. His telephone number is 01324 825523. I can highly recommend him. He is a fount of knowledge and an all round good bloke.
Cheers

if it turns out to be the lifters a good thing to do is to flush the engine, put new oil in and give it a good rev.

Thanks for the replies. I have a timing kit and water pump waiting to go on in the next few weeks.
Hard to describe the noise except to say that it sounds like a diesel!
If it is still noisy after the new timing belt and tensioner etc I will investigate the injectors. Hopefully I can find a local diesel specialist. I have run through one bottle of diesel cleaner but perhaps it needs some more.
happy Easter
