XM Droplinks- A cautionary tale

Post by Doc »

Not so long ago I noticed the droplinks had worn at only 10,000 miles and a year of mostly motorway driving. The offside lower joint was showing about 3-5mm of travel. The next day whilst coming home from work one night, the car suddenly made a loud bang from the front off side. After checking to make sure a tyre hadn't blown, I got the car back home (less than quarter mile) and investigated. The droplink had separated at the lower mount. The balljoint was rusty and completely dry and the 'cup' was also corroded and full of dry remains of grease. [V] The fixing bolt and anti-roll bar were undamaged. I am just glad it was the lower joint that had failed and not the upper. If that had gone the droplink may have flopped over and jammed up or snagged the wheel or steering gear! I have taken pictures of the remains but I am not sure how to post them on this forum.
So if anyone out there has a Citroen with droplinks check them for wear as they can fail rapidly once they make knocking sounds.
