Hi all maybe, I might but is the torsion bar really that bad? I have been quoted £300 to do it by a local mechanic

Someone with experience and good facilities and tools on hand it could be less than 2 hours labour easily and there are no parts required AT ALL (unless fitting new dampers etc). So at normal garage rates, say £40p/h plus VAT=£100+VAT max.
Unless there are seized/damaged parts in which case it could take double or triple the time-but it is unlikely to be so bad that a good mechanic working under shelter with good tools to hand can't handle it in a couple or three hours.
£300 sounds at least 50% too expensive to me.
EDIT: I was talking only about lowering the rear suspension only. If it were the price for the rear and the front (ie fitting new springs and dampers to the front too) then it wouldn't be such a bad deal.
