Hi I'm new to the forum, I have a 1993 Citroen C15 with the xud bosch pump engine. When I bought the vehicle 2 months ago it drove ok, I brought it home on a transporter and started working on the chassis.I've put a new cambelt on which I know is timed correctly ,but the engine is running rough.I trace this to the number one cylinder .I've removed the injectors and the injector in the number one cylinder was different to the other three, so I thought this was likely to be the problem.
I managed to find a full set of new injectors and I fitted them today with new fire washers and copper washers, but the engine still does not seem to run on number 1 cylinder.,when I crack the fuel pipe there is no difference in the engine tone.So my question is, is this likely to be a pump or a more serious problem in the number one cylinder i.e. valves or piston rings.
Will will the next step be a compression test?
Thanks for your advice, I wait impatiently as I am at my wits end with it.

Re: Help C15 issue
A quick check on whether compression is even across all four cylinders can be done by cranking the engine without starting it (disconnect the +12 supply to the fuel stop solenoid on the pump), and listening as each cylinder compresses. All four should sound the same. If one or more 'accelerates', then compression is an issue.
Could also be a head gasket problem, not unknown on XUD. Valvegear/pistons/rings on these engines are pretty sturdy under normal conditions.

Ok thanks I'll try that. It's odd though because as I say, when I first drove it 2 months ago it drove fine.
Re: Help C15 issue
I've tried that check cranking over and it sounds ok however I've removed the rocker cover and on initial inspection the cylinder I suspect doesn't appear to have any valve clearance on the inlet valve.going to try again tomorrow with a different set of feeler gauges as mine are a bit suspect.

Re: Help C15 issue
I've checked the valve clearances tonight ,the exhaust are about where they should be .25mm but the inlets are 3 between .03mm and .06 mm,and the suspect cylinder is less than .03 which is my smallest feeler gauge which won't quite go under. Should be no 0.10 mm min.
Gonna try and get hold of a diesel compression tester just to double check.

Hi Brian,
Not sure whether you already have this, but there's a good Citroen mechanics' handbook covering C15 (and other utility vehicles) here:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=61218#p590278
- includes valve clearances (p145) and compression pressures.
You'll find the C15 publication by clicking on Relay I & II in Marc's table. The 2001 edition should cover yours, although there are later editions up to 2005.
Marc,
Could you add C15 into the title for this group of handbooks?
Thanks,
C.

Re: Help C15 issue
Thanks that's great, I'm going to check compression before I consider removing the cyl head. I don't think the heads been off it so it's strange that the clearances are so tight on the inlet side .
The workshop manual says 0.10mm +/- 0.08mm so could be ok. Thanks again.

Re: Help C15 issue
If the tappet gap has closed it's likely that the head has dropped off the valve and is stuck into the crown of the piston.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.
