Citroen C3 egr valve

Post by Frank7002 »

Hi all, I'm looking for some help.
I have a citroen c3 1.4hdi and it was running fine until I had the engine warning light come on. Had the code looked at and it was a EGR fault, car at this point kept going into limp mode and was down on power. The slightest hill would stop it dead. Changed the EGR valve and the car is no better, started to smoke (which it didn't before) and is still down on power.
Does anyone have any ideas where I look next ?
Thanks in advance for any help

Can you remember exactly what the code was? Was the car read by a Lexia/Diagbox or a general diagnostic reader?

Hi, the code was P0401. The branding on the unit the garage used was Modis edge if that helps.

You need to pop your VIN up here so I can look at the specific code as it relates to the specific engine ECU, as you could have a Bosch or Siemens setup depending on which 1.4 HDi you have.

But in either case it would suggest that the air flow measured is different to the reference value. So check your Air Flow Meter but do not touch the thin wire in the MAF with anything other than some MAF cleaner - it might be the cause, but there are other suspects.

Once I have your VIN I can get some further info.

You made some errors in the digits, but I have corrected it for the right VIN and edited your post to update it.

That will do, leave it with me for a second or 3

Ok, so confirmed you have the DV4TD Engine with Siemens Injection ECU.

So here are the details of this fault code - and as you can see there are several possibilities. I would start with checking the MAF, but this should give your garage / mechanic some starting points - start with the easiest and cheapest options first like cleaning the MAF or checking if it is operating correctly. You have replaced the EGR so can eliminate that. Hope this helps.
Fault codeP0401
After sales description of the fault codeAir system fault: Measured quantity of air higher than the setting
Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning messageSwitching on of the warning lamp possible DW10B
Main customer complaints likelyLack of power
Engine hesitation
Noise
Back-up mode following returning of the faultsIf the warning lamp lights
- The ECU stops the regulation of the EGR valve (*)
- Deactivation of the initialisations of the EGR valve
- The ECU limits the flow of fuel and prohibits the cruise control/speed limiter
Conditions for returning of the faultThe difference between the air flow reference value and the flow measured by the air flow sensor exceeds the authorised threshold

Confirmation time: Difference observed for approximately 15s

For the P0401, the flow measured is higher than the flow reference value. The value depends on the engine, the air temperature and the coolant temperature
Suspect areas / Faulty componentsThe EGR valve is jammed shut
Air leak after the compressor
Air flow sensor information incorrect
Vacuum problem
Variable geometry of the turbocharger jammed in the "maximum turbocharging" position
Engine concernedDV6, DV4 Bosch, DV4 Siemens, DW10B Siemens
(*) Consequence for the parameter measurements :
Electric EGR valve control OCR = 0 %
Position repeat = 0 %

Would it make a difference if I pulled the battery ? Haven't had the car reset after doing the valve and don't know if this matters

No, a BSI reset won't have any bearing on the fault code. The issue has been logged by the Engine ECU and stored in the BSI. The conditions for the fault disappearing will be on the values returning to expected levels. Until this happens the car will remain in backup mode with reduced power.

Marc, do you know if the end-stops need calibrating if the EGR has been replaced?
Have the codes been re-read since the EGR was replaced?
