INJECTORS 2.2 HDi

Post by Bigjohn »

Took the Car to a local respected Diesel Specialists in Southampton today, the car has a noise when excellerating, about 2000rpm up, very regular fast and very metallic, they said it was a noise from the injectors very common but not often heard, I asked if it would do damage the answer was no, it has to go back in as No1 injector is leaking past the compression seal, fair bit of carbon is being pushed up and out, has any one else come across the noise on their 2.2 engine, they also said the injectors were unserviceable due to being the Piezo? type.

There are generally 2 types of injectors, Piezo and solenoid operated. Piezo are the newer type but more expensive. The property of a Piezo crystal causes it to change shape when an electrical current is administered, so it acts as a valve. Piezo are more accurate and less noisy. It's all to do with the Euro standards - by increasing fuel efficiency it means manufacturers have to add less other equipment to lower emissions.

However, I'm not sure about the last bit - as far as I know there are diesel injector specialists that repair these.

Thank you for your reply, I have since contacted another fuel injection specialists in Southampton, their reply was they are possibly repairable in the Factory, but they will not invest in the equipment required to work on them, so it looks like its the cost of equipment to the return of actually doing the Job, again it comes down to profit, to be honest if there is nothing to be gained and new are available its the way of the world to fit new.

I was also asked if I wear hearing aids, my reply was yes, apparently and it was not explained, I am more lightly to pick up the noise from the injectors, I see a can of worms opening!!!

That's more likely to be the case - equipment investment cost - not that it can't be done.

Here are Bosch Diesel Centre locations in case it's of any use:

There are a couple in Southampton, one in Portsmouth... maybe worth a call.

Been traw!ling the net, found an interesting blurb on the 406 forum via tappy talk, the 2.2 and other HDi diesels suffer from an injector problem, basically instead of getting the very small pre squirt of diesel you get the full wack too early, if you listen to the injector on tickover using a stethoscope or screwdriver to the ear the normal injectors will be an orderly tick, the odd one will be extremely noisy, something to do with the pre diesel action holding the valve open?

About time for an update, Car went into the garage the Car Sales use Tuesday last week, as they would not pay the labour rate for the diesel specialists I wanted it to go to, somewhat disappointed but hey ho its their prerogative, injectors were removed..................................then taken to the diesel specialists I wanted the car to go to, to be tested :rofl2: Injectore one and two firing their full load when they should be firing a microscopic amount to stop the full load from making too much of a clatter, so in effect they were firing two full shots per cycle, no wonder it was not as economic as I was hoping!! their solution...........fit two known good second hand, still a cost of £100 each (To be honest if I had done the job I would of gone down the second hand rout) so they are due Tuesday 19th and hopefully car back to me in time for a trip to the NEC on Friday for the Practical Classics Show, I do not want to drive up in the Wifes 3 cylinder Viva!! plus the hassle of changing the parking arrangements (Car number plate) with NEC staff doesn't thrill me with joy.

Well its back in the garage, drove to Birmingham on friday for the Practical Classics restoration show, highly recommended by the way, got home no drama, on the Monday I drove to waterlooville about 15 miles from Southampton to pick up a pair of roof bars for a modest sum of £5 they were the corect Mitsubishi ones as well, all the tools well happy, smell of diesel as I was parked nose down on their steep drive I noticed a liquid dripping, drove out onto level ground and looked, No1 and No2 injector seemed to have lost the seal on the spill pipes, so back in the garage, with the Car sales admitting fitting second hand ones was not possibly the right way to go, hey ho, so far its been off the road longer than on in my short ownership.
