C2 2009: Dead rear lights after battery replacement

Post by bento_clogs »

A few months ago my battery died. I'm not sure what happened but I think I left the lights on.

The battery wouldn't recharge so I replaced it but the passenger side headlight had died. I also noticed that the right-turn indicator was flashing twice as fast.

The car had its MOT soon after and the garage replaced the headlight. However, a few weeks later the indicator began to flash twice as fast from time to time. It's been doing so constantly for about a month.

Having checked the rear, I can see that the entire cluster of driver side rear lights is not working. I've checked the bulbs and all the filaments are intact. The car doesn't display any errors -- they just don't work.

Also, soon after I replaced the battery, the car warned me briefly that the engine had overheated and I needed to stop. I was close to home so I thought nothing of it. Last week, it happened again after a long drive. I stopped for about twenty minutes until the fans had stopped but the warning recurred about a mile later. Could this be connected to the lights problem?

I've checked all the fuses -- apart from the maxi ones -- but according to the manual none have any to do with the lights.

I'd appreciate any ideas.

Rapid flashing of lights indicates a short circuit somewhere - very similar to when one of your indicator bulbs goes - the others flash rapidly. Not all lighting circuits provide a fault code that will be picked up by Lexia - or a diagnostic tool. I'd start checking your earthing points and wiring harness, but also the engine fuse box and lighting connectors. Clean up the contacts and make sure there are no pins loose or not making contact.

I wonder if (as the previous battery had died) it could be worth doing a BSi reset, just to clear down any 'glitched' that might have occurred?
