Average cost please

Well after looking into it. I cant afford to replace the van,too much extra monthly outlay, and too short a warranty. Mileage now is 93k, cambelt is due at 100k, I can get a kit , including belt and tensioners for just unfer 100quid, what would it cost labour wise. Also been told to expect to change clutch from about 100k miles onwards, replacement kit 105. .again what about labour?

Can't help with the labour charges now but I went for Citroen's fixed price repair for my C5 2.0 Litre HDI timing belt, popped it into their main dealer workshop and had a wander around town for four hours, collected it all done, car washed and vacuumed, price paid £345.00 with original parts, there was a slightly cheaper option available with after market parts.

Recently had all three belts (cam+aux+balancer) replaced on the XM. One of the fixed price jobs available, including the 6.5h labour. Could have cut €100 off the bill by sourcing my own aftermarket parts, but no, better to have Citroen fit their own parts, and hence the whole job is warranted, no quibbling. Approx. €550 all in, including €200 for the parts. It is also not a pleasant job, and really deserves proper electronic belt tensioning equipment.

The mechanic was actually quite chuffed to get the job - a 22-year-old 2.5 made a nice change from all the modern stuff, he said afterwards.

500 quid to replace the cam belt? Sod that, considering I have lost so much money on this van in less than a year of ownership. It has cost me well over a 1000 in repairs and is worth less than half what I paid for it 10 months ago.

I think you can be grateful that you don't have a dual mass flywheel on your dispatch too Rich.

Mine was about a £1000 (non-dealer) for the DMF, clutch kit and labour for my X7.

As for timing - here are the official offerings from Citroen parts - I've included the belt and pulleys kit and secondly the same but with water pump too:

Not a bad price that actually Marc,128, I looked on ecp and they quoted 97 for the belt kit and 60 for water pump..
Transmech clutch kit was 102. I take it just the 2.0 has the dmf? A mate from work has the 2.0 and he was quoted 1k to change his clutch and dmf. Does the dmf need changing regardless? When I had my Rover 75 they only needed changing if they were out of tolefance. Ie there was more free play than the recommended limit.

The 1.6 HDi belt job is not too bad - books at <4 hours including the water pump AFAIK. There is a calibrated spring tensioner so no need for a tension gauge, timing pin kit is only a few quid.

I wouldn't go near a Transmech clutch - they are remanufactured, and often not all that well.... It's usually recommended to change the DMF at the same time as the clutch, as they often don't bed down well together afterwards otherwise.

I thought the 1.6HDi had a 150k interval for the timing belt?...

Anyway, where abouts are you? Savoy in Lancs are very reasonable for this kind of stuff.

As for the clutch.. if it works, leave it until it doesn't..

Oh yeah wasn’t going to do it just for the sake of it. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, is my motto . Wasn’t actually considering transmech , just quoting the make. Now that you mention it, I have heard bad stuff about them before.

Yes, no DMF on your dispatch, it uses a solid flywheel, so no need to worry about that. It’s recommended to do the DMF on other vehicles that have them when doing the clutch as they don’t always last as long as 2 clutches and that then involves all the labour to do the job again.

The timing kit is good value from Citroen., I just had mine done on the X7 - got the complete genuine OEM kit with water pump for £158 direct from Citroen. Just paid my local mechanic to do it for me.

As far as I can recall it’s 10 years or 150k. But I’ll have to double check tomorrow.

That’s the max though and many people get it done before then just in case. I had mine done on a time basis, not mileage, but I got it done at 9 years for peace of mind.
