What's involved in removing an XUD9 from a Synergie?

It's had a snapped timing belt, and snapped the camshaft in two places, ripped the rocker cover bolts out etc. Obviously the valves will be dead, so new head.

I've been trying to get the head off, but am defeated by the exhaust manifold. I just can't get behind it even with the engine rocked forward on the bottom mount. So I'm thinking engine out.

Once I have access, there are two options I'm considering:

- Replace the head myself with one off a spare one I have next to it. Assuming the pistons aren't shot.
- Have a garage replace the engine entirely with one out of a spares/repairs car/van

So far I can think of these:

- Engine mounts (already removed two)
- Exhaust (I can't get to the manifold in-place, so would probably remove it at the bottom of the downpipe)
- Air intake
- Coolant hoses - one at the thermostat, one at the bottom-back, and probably some others)
- Drive Shafts from the gearbox. Is this difficult?
- Vacuum lines
- Fuel lines
- Accelerator cable
- Alternator cables
- Any wiring looms

I don't have a hoist, so it's going to be wheeled trolley jacks.

Is it going to be easier out the front, or out the bottom with the subframe removed?
