The X7, I'm fairly sure, has a separate button on the steering wheel boss to flip between CC and overspeed but I have never operated it.
Not on MK 1s as wheeler says - there is no speed regulation on the Cruise control stalk. The overspeed warning is available independently (I had this on my MK I but no cruise). It is as James says a matter of reaching a desired speed, holding the end of the stalk in and then getting the 'gong' sound. Then you get a warning when you exceed that speed - but it is not a speed limiter device, just a warning.

MK I C5 cruise stalks have the cruise only barrel setting, not the limiter option at the bottom. It was included on the MK II on.

See the pictures in Wheeler's guide, which is a link referred to in the link above.

As an aside - what is the "Check Control" supposed to do?
Never been able to get any sense out of mine.

My Overspeed only works for 30mph.

The check control is just a place that stores some of the warning messages. If there have been any warning messages they will be stored and can be retrieved using this function until they are rectified or no longer valid.

As far as the overspeed warning goes Steve, that 30 mph is what it is currently programmed for. This speed limit can be changed and set to any speed you want.

I think you just hold the stalk until it bongs which should disable the overspeed, and the next time you reach the desired speed you want you just hold it in again to set it at the new current speed.

Thanks Marc - never any response from the "Check Control"

I have messed about with the overspeed but again it doesn't seem to respond. Always have it off now as it is just annoying at 30mop.

There's asequence to using it and my memory isn't 100% - but I think you have to activate it first, then reach the desired speed (over a certain minimum), then hold the button in when you are at the speed until it memorises the speed - and then that's it - until you turn it off or want to programme a new speed.

As for the Check Control - having nothing is good - it means there are no warnings.

Speed limiter (not overspeed warning) is available on many Citroen models too, it became available when they moved onto full CAN multiplexing.
I have never tried to use a CC stalk with limiter function on a model with just CC. I can say the speed limiter function wont work unless there is a ‘hard spot’ switch in the accelerator pedal but as i have never tried it i dont know if the CC side of it will still work. Every time i have retrofitted CC i have always used the correct stalk.

Just been out and intended to give that a go.
Forgot as usual :)

I have an airbag fault come up on the display a couple of minutes after starting the car (no airbag light) but it doesn't show on the Check control.

It will only show some types of faults Steve, but not general OBD faults.

I suspect the control module under the steering wheel will need to support it and also have the correct electronic architecture on the vehicle, as well as the correct level of BSI and software. I’ve yet to see evidence of any MKII speed redulation system working in a MK I, so I agree, fitting the correct system is the most sensible option.

Not for some early models 2002 and earlier - but post your VIN up and I'll check if you have a Comms unit.

53 plate? Almost certainly providing it's not a very late registered 2001 model!

Quick means of identifying. If your radio remote controls are actually on your steering wheel - no. If they're on a separate stalk on the right under the wiper stalk - yes.
