I run my 1999 DW8 1.9D Citroen Dispatch (very similar to the XUD9) on various blends of SVO. Depending on the overnight temperature I go for these SVO:Derv ratios:

10+ degrees: 100%
7-9 degrees: 90%:10%
4-6 degrees: 75%:25%
1-3 degrees: 60%:40%
below 0 degrees: 50%:50%

You know what's annoying though? A run of warmish nights, then one night in the middle where it dips below 0. Do I risk the one cold start, or throw in a load of Derv for one cold start? I normally go for the latter out of fear.

So I was toying with the idea of a bodged twin tank setup that I don't even need to fit into the engine bay. Just something that lets me purge the veg from the filter and pump so the cold start is on 100% Derv.

Did a bit of a proof of concept today and it seemed to go quite well.

I separated the return as I wanted to see what ratio is consumed vs returned. Turns out, a lot! ~800ml returned vs ~50ml consumed in 2 1/2 minutes of idling.

So I'll need to have a think about what to do with the return.

run my old Shogun on it for years, quieter,smooth running,more mpg,less cost {put it up now} TESCO... MOT,,,,,,No Show on the Machine{o} Zero Emissions..
wouldn t give me the pass emissions ticket though . lol.

I recall reading somewhere that veggie emissions are actually worse BUT they're different so don't count for MoT purposes.

Could you not run a twin tank system similar to that used on the old TVO tractors? They started on petrol, once warm switched to heating fuel, then before turning the engine off, switch back to petrol to cleanse the system ready for the next start.

Surely two 3 port solenoid valves could be used. One for the fuel line and one for the return line.

If you wanted to be clever, you could time the return 3 port valve to wait however long it takes to purge the return with diesel line before it switches over :-D

Yes this is correct. The particulates are worse as is the CO.

I think I posted the article on here many aeons ago..

Yea this is an option I'm considering, but the £80 in solenoid switchers is a bit hefty. I'd be happy with just a manual switch in the bonnet as I won't be using it every day.

It may not be a fossil fuel but there will be fair amount of fossil fuel used in its manufacture and distribution. Not to mention the fertiliser used which will probably be fossil fuel based.

And where do you get this zero emissions from? Of course burning any fuel creates emissions,

The closest argument I've seen towards Veg being "zero emission" is that it's last year's Carbon Dioxide being breathed in by last year's plants, and now my Carbon Dioxide emissions are being breathed in by this year's plants. Ovciously that's a gross oversimplification, but it's definitely true that from a CO2 point of view, veg is much better than fossil fuels.

But the shift in focus from CO2 to other nasties means CO2 isn't all that's on the agenda now. From what I remember, veg is worse for NOx, Sulphur and Particulates.
