Post by RPWC »

I had the oil changed on my 1.6 hdi a few weeks back and since then each time its started from cold, its sounds clattery for about 5 /6 seconds any ideas what this could be and how to rectify? Oil thickener???

Stating the bleedin obvious first; make sure you're using the correct oil and quantity.
My engine was like that after I first changed the oil/filter so added Forte oil flush after 1000miles, ran it gently for 100miles then changed it all again. It soon quietened down and hasn't recurred after subesequent oil changes.

All I know is Total INEO ECS (which is 5W/30 fully synth) goes in my engine. I'm not saying you should follow my example either as I suspect my engine was internally dirtier than it should have been.
Just keep the oil as clean as you can afford and at the right level and it may clear up on it's own after the additives/detergents/dispersants get to work.

If the filter canister was changed, possible that they fitted one without a non-return flap-valve (the rubber diaphragm you can see through the large holes surrounding the central threaded one). This allows oil to drain out of the filter and the oil galleries, and produces oil starvation on start-up.

Treat it to another oil and filter change asap.

they may have fitted the filter wrong, there is a drain hole for the filter cartridge in the filter housing if this is not blocked by the lug on the filter oil can drain back into the sump lowering oil pressure.

Make sure that the oil filter comes with the correct O-ring. The filter I bought from a motor factor for our Mk2 308 had a thinner O-ring than the one I took off. I fitted it somewhat dubiously, started the engine and looked for leaks. I didn't see any so, reassured, closed the bonnet.

The next day I noticed oil under the car and, to cut a long story short, had to buy a replacement filter from a Peugeot dealer to get the correct O-ring. What I hadn't allowed for when observing the filter housing for leaks is that the bowl sits inside the housing and so it takes time to fill up before dripping down the side of the engine. Are you leaking any oil?

The problem has to be oil starvation due to drain-back.
I had overlooked you could have a replaceable cartridge element; could the contents of the filter bowl have been re-assembled wrongly?

I wouldn’t have a clue Chris, as I’m not familiar with the way these are put together.

Perhaps a good idea to go back to the garage/workshop that did the oil change, and talk with them.
Maybe show them this thread, if it helps.

The noise does point to oil not being immediately available under pressure on start-up. This fault is well-known where a non-return valve (or filter with one) is not working as it should.

The filter has a plug that fits in the drain hole
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engine-Oil-F ... 1006.m3226

In this one its the plug with the green O ring - fit the filter wrong and you will get low oil pressure

Thanks for that, I will try and get a look at it over the holidays, I have a set of assorted rubber o rings of different sizes and thickness.

Depending on how the filter was fitted it may be damaged so if it is all squashed i would replace the filter.

For information - the large O-ring shown is the thinner type and was wrong for our car. Doesn't mean it's wrong for your car of course.

To be fair, using their car checker it doesn't say it's suitable either.
