2.0 HDi clutch

Post by oscar »

Hi 2001 Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDI clutch has died well thrust race side by look/feel of it.
Could feel the grinding back through pedal then pedal went to floor did flip it back up got it back a few times then went down and stayed engine cut out did get it to start then went again so had to whirr it out of way on starter as clutch was engaged ok.

Thought maybe cam belt or jumped at first then thought that sensor is in bell housing! Garage guy i spoke to and few others said crank sensor!
Does that sound about right?
It turns over the same as normal on starter.

Now need to go and find all the bits for it now ie clutch kit, arm, metal sleeve then put slave cylinder back together! as popped out and lost fluid.

On a brighter note sorted Ignition switch so that works

For the crank shaft sensor is the magnet in the sensor or on the flywheel? going to have a look at taking it out to clean etc so see if it starts?

The magnet and coil are in the sensor

4 hours may be a bit optimistic. Subframe definitely doesn't need dropping

Hi well had my fingers under bonnet!
Found and removed Crankshaft sensor! Looks like Dogs been using it as a toy/chew! Split up side and end looks rather battered so can see innards so me thinks Deceased and reason not starting rather than other end.
When i turned it over other day it sounds just like when wants to start.
Debating on trying new sensor in to see if starts but if bits flying/lying around in housing will it just pick them up and ruin this one also?
Mind only £10-15

I remember when a forum member had clutch issues. When he had the clutch replaced they forgot to clear out the bell housing. This meant that, when the engine was at decent revs, the flywheel was picking up the debris of the old clutch and throwing it around the bell housing. This ended up chewing the sensor, so it would then die (and stop the engine in the process).

definitely try and avoid putting in a new sensor with bits of broken clutch flying about. Trouble is it's magnetic so it attacts the debris which then jams against the flywheel

Hi got one ordered had to check right one as seems year changes! Yawn! yet look the same.
When the monsoon has departed will have a go at putting it back in to see if fires up but won't leave it running.
Bosch sensor was £11 odd delivered there are some cheaper but after getting an ignition switch from likes of them which was like hanging a puppy on the lead as all the cables was too short!
Decided to give a wide berth.

Must be a pretty mess inside there?

It does not take much to wipe out the sensor. It could be as little as a tablespoon full of bits. Once the flywheel is spinning it will set up air currents that can (depending on how fast the engine is running at and the size of the bits) get debris moving quite rapidly. Once it hits the sensor the debris will erode it. Once the sensor fails the engine will stop running, then and there.

I second that.
Given its cheap, the experiment may still be valid.
Nobody wants to put a new clutch kit on a non-runner, after all.
So, yes, try it, but don't let it run unless you're happy to junk the new sensor.
Whip it over on the starter and you should know immediately if it's going to fire.
If it's reluctant, then you're in deeper trouble than that anyway, so you can decide whether to bother, but if it jumps into life, then knock it off and source the clutch kit. Clean out the bell housing thoroughly and check the state of the sensor, while you have it apart.
Good luck

Is there a relatively easily removable section below the flywheel/sump area, so bits could be hooked/pulled/flushed out ?
