Peter, it has had all 4 injectors replaced with reconditioned units, about a month ago, is it possible that one could have turned faulty? Would you suggest taking it back to the firm that replaced the injectors for further investigation?

Listen to each of the compressions, and they should all be the same. If the cranking momentarily accelerates every fourth compression, then there's a cylinder gone leaky. This test can be done engine cold, or engine hot, to inform about each condition.

Where is the stop solenoid Chris?

Good move Chris, why didn't I think of it  . I was watching a video of an American mechanic using a scope to look at the variation in starter current draw via a clamp on ammeter, but listening to it should achieve the same result.

There is a small French car specialist a few miles away, I might pop along and ask them to cast their eye.

I'm guessing it's this, #10 on the diag. Just unplug.

Hi,Thanks for that info,we learn something new every day..
I do not suppose this could Start, and become a run away engine by any chance,as you wouldn't be able to stop it,short of stuffing your coat down the inlet.lol.

Only does it when cold had oil and filter changed, mind made up , one last try with French car specialist,if they can sort it I will keep it. If not then it will ne px for something else of similar value but easier maintained. This is due a cambelt change in 9000 miles which will take me to mot time in April

White smoke is either unburnt fuel (should smell of diesel) or coolant-glycol getting into one of the pots. The latter will usually smell sweet, and looks like white fog; usually a HG issue.

If a glycol/HG problem, this usually persists even with a hot engine, so less likely in your case.
