C4gp handbrake fault

Have an issue that my handbrake won't release unless I activate the switch as soon as I turn ignition on
If I wait and try it comes up with the brake pedal symbol as if am not pressing the brake pedal
Have replaced the brake switch and the extension cable that was added plus tested the origanal which was fine
The front wheel sensor has a break in the wire some where trying to find it
But I can't see this being the cause of the handbrake
Not recognising the brake pedal being pressed
Although with this car anything is possible
Any help much appreciated
The hand brake switch is my next replacement is there anyway to check the circuit board within the switch

You need to get it on Diagbox to see what the computer can see. I can't think why it would come off initially, but then not after a short while....

I really wouldn't keep replacing components willy nilly - it can become expensive. As Richard says, you need to get it diagnosed properly. Don't be fooled by thinking that the wheel sensor won't have anything to do with the system.

The vehicle uses the ESP / ABS ECU to control the handbrake ECU as in a Master / Slave relationship and this includes many of the automatic features like Hill Start Assist. A fault in this system will cause the handbrake to go into backup mode and lose some functionality.

Cheers for the reply it's in at the minute getting the sensor wire fault chased as it shows no speed when tested
Have c1331 and c1301and p0571and U1213
Will keep on looking and hopefully will get the answer

P0571 = Cruise Control/Brake Switch A Circuit Malfunction

That'll be it then.... maybe it is not adjusted correctly and both contacts are not making at the same time - or there is a break in a wire somewhere, or the underbonnet fuse box is playing up.

Hi Bill

Here is the data I have for those faults. As you can see the downgrade mode will switch off all speed control functions like Cruise Control and Speed Limiter - so that fault is very likely to be expected and will probably disappear when the main fault is fixed with the Wheel sensor / ESP System.

As you can see the operations of the parking brake are all related to the ESP ABS ECU as I mentioned earlier. There are several suspects listed on each table - all of which can result in the problem you have.

Replaced thin blue wire from top of battery fuse box to esp ecu as it had several repairs along it
Now no speedometer just 2 dashes
This car is fighting me all the way

Fixed dash but still no input from front right abs sensor
On closer inspection of the loom have found 2 previous repairs that have been carried out
But they have joined a pair of twisted wires together and only 1 coming out but have done this twice
I think to fool a sensor or ecu
And now the blue wire on battery fuse box has snapped at the terminal and I can't get the crimp out
Does anyone know how to remove these crips from the fuse holder

Hi Bill

Sorry to hear the ongoing saga!

Doing a little research I can see that there seems to be big issues with the wiring looms on the C4 Picassos from 2008. You blue wire from the ABS module was along with several others a cause of multiple warning lights on the vehicle in this video:

Watch it all the way through and you'll see how bad the wires are under the tape later. I don't think any of the wires should be joined together as you have found from previous repairs - the twisted pair wires are usually the CAN signal wires. It might be worth a little investigation. On another case, the owner had to pay 600 Euros for a loom and 4 hours labour to have it replaced as it was damaged in so many places. Hopefully yours will be isolated.

It looks like really bad quality wiring / sheathing was used - but honestly putting that many wires together in a single loom seems ludicrous to me and wouldn't take much movement to start breaking the wires with that much strain / weight!



As for the wiring - not sure if this helps, but the pis may have a 'lock' bar that is slid to allow removal of pins and moved over again to secure once the pin is reinserted. So check on the end of the connector for a small release bar or wire that can be lifted or moved. Generally, this is where some heatshrink repairs may be needed if the wires are broken in the loom. Kits like the one below are a couple of £ now

It's shocking really Bill that the wiring is of this low quality - and does make me wonder what the rest of us are driving around with under our bonnets!

I had the battery out of ours and spliced a couple of wires in there which looked a bit suspect and I thought might be causing the handbrake light to come on - turned out not to be, but there you go!

It's a mine field you read online it can be an egr fault or some other obscure issue
My bet is that while they thought it was the egr they probably moved the loom and it fixed it
Till the loom moves again
