Citroen C5 Frozen Instruments

Post by winstonburns »

Hi,

Am new here and have joined to get advice on my 2003 Citroen C5 Diesel car which to date has been a great machine. 2 very odd things have happened. All the instruments have frozen, eg , speedo stuck at 30, fuel, temp rev counter all at zero and at the same time the low beam has stopped working. It's not the bulbs on the low beam because to keep me going I have swapped the wires over from the high beam and just drive with the car lights switched to high beam.

I am guessing it's a bus or module problem of some kind but my OBDwizz scantool cable won't talk to it as it doesn't on many old Diesels. Can anyone suggest a solution and if not at least point me to a program I can get to interrogate the car to see what is going on.

many thanks

winston

Hi, and :welc: to the Forum. I am sorry but I cannot help you directly. However, I do know that normal OBD readers cannot communicate with PSA cars (as, being French, they use protocols all their own). However, there are Forum members with Lexia clones that CAN work with the PSA cars. I would suggest you check the following link for forum members in your area, to see if any of them can help you.

EDIT; Oops, forgot the link. Added.

My initial thoughts will be the Comms Unit inside the steering wheel - but you'll need a Lexia to interrogate the car as generic scanners aren't much use on PSa vehicles and won't give you the detail. The C5 although 2003 is a CAN / VAN multiplexed vehicle and is perfectly capable of providing detailed fault codes. Check out the member list to see if anyone near you can help first.

I note James ^ forgot to post the link, so here it is - at the end of the post there will be a link to a Google map that shows locations of members that have offered Lexia services:

I suppose you could pop the instrument panel out and unplug/re-plug it to see what happens, it only take a couple of minutes.

Two butter knives slid under the bottom to open the clips and a gentle tug from the bottom and it's out.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Try this procedure first - although I suspect it may be more than a BSI reset issue:
  • Open bonnet and Driver side window.
  • Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition
  • Wait for 5 minutes, then disconnect the vehicle battery negative and wait at least 5 minutes. Don't open any doors or press any buttons.
  • Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 3 minutes (do not open doors).
  • Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.
  • Switch on the ignition only, don’t start vehicle yet and check system's functionality.
  • With key still in ignition hold lock button on key down for 5 seconds.
  • Remove key through window, then operate Central locking several times.
  • Now open door and start the engine and complete the system's check.
  • Failure to follow this procedure could result in incorrect operation of many BSI related items.

Hi,

Thanks for the welcome and comments to date. I had already tried a BSI reset but sadly to no avail. Will try the Lexia guys and see if anyone can help.

thanks again.

No probs thanks. Popping instrument panel out and cleaning contacts made no difference which didn't surprise me. Has anyone tried using EOBD-facile. Their free version talks to the car ok but to actually do anything with it I have to buy the program. It's more generic than Lexia but wondered if it might be a better all rounder for other cars I might buy in the future.
