Xantia steering pipe failed!

Post by Stewart(oily) »

Oh bugger, a fine spray of LHM is jetting forth from my Xantia HDI 110, investigation reveals its coming from the dreaded power steering pipe, is anyone doing a kit to repair these as the car is otherwise very wholesome. HELP!

Further inspection reveals that it is that pipe, much of it is fine, just the length passing the wheelarch, all steel, the rest of it looks wholesome, my plan is now to splice in a length of cunifer 3/16 using compression fittings, if this proves inadequate I shall borrow a flaring tool that can do steel pipe.

I have fixed some pipes that were broken from the wheel arch side of the rubber by brazing a cunifer brake pipe to the good steel pipe with an acetylene blowtorch. To strengthen the joint i brazed a larger diameter pipe over the joint and filled it too.

Update, I have spliced in a length of 3/16 cunifer brake pipe using compression fittings, the rest of the original pipe looks wholesome, I needed a dremel to cut the old pipes and it took a bit of searching to find a bit smooth enough for the fitting to have a chance of getting a seal, underneath the rubber on a bracket there was such a place, a round of citaerobics and lock to lock standing still and it appears oiltight. Phew!
