Any advice please C5 MK1 petron engine cutting out : )

Post by spiff »

Good afternoon gentlemen from a sunny Mullion Cove Cornwall.

The C5 MK1 auto petrol estate 2003 has another problem.

This first happened once a few weeks back over very few miles and again twice last week during a forty mile round trip.

Today on returning from the boot sale the engine cut out four times over a few miles.

It normally happens slowing down, it has not happened at top gear driving speeds.

Slip it into neutral, turn the key and it starts straight off : )

Nothing is coming up on the display.

I did not spot anything last week when I cleared all the fault for a pollution warning on the display, that had appeared after fitting a new cat ?

The pollution warning has not shown up again on the display since, and did not appear when the engine cut out before, so the two are not related.

I think : )

Any suggestions welcome : )

Is it just the engine cutting out, or do any of the electrics go out at the same time (dash etc)?

Good afternoon Wurlycorner,

I had not thought to check that one, so I do not know the answer.

It will have to wait untill the next time the fault occurs to check exacly what happens, when cars are behind you a quick restart is the first thought : )

Your question is food for thought, thank you for that.

Good afternoon from a sunny Mullion Cove Cornwall.

An update on the engine stopping fault : )

The speedometer drops to zero even thought the car is still moving.

There are no lights such as service or otherwise.

The top display still shows the correct time, but any other readings such as how many miles per gallon disappear to - - - -.

If the car is still moving I drop to neutral, restart and back into drive.

It happens when my foot is off the accelerator, often turning in a roundabout or to a parking space.

The drive belt is new and the idler and tensioner, the steering pump is second hand.

The rev counter at tick over is 75 to 80, in that I mean taking the first 1 on the scale as 100.

The air coin can be on or off.

Plenty of fuel.

The engine oil level is fine.

The car starts fine no missing.

Battery is 12 months old, the car rarely drops into economy mode, unless taking power with the engine off for some time.

Have searched all over the place online, quite a common fault on lots of different makes and difficult to pin down.

Fault perhaps after10 or 20 mile, can then happen again soon after. then ok on return trip of 20 miles.

Any thoughts anyone : )

This would be normal (lost the reference levels for fuel usage etc because the engine has been shut off)
The speedometer drops to zero even thought the car is still moving.
This I find surprising... Although I haven't tried turning the engine off while moving - I will give that a go when I am in my s1 C5 tomorrow and let you know (unless someone else beats me to it before then - please do feel free people!!!)
It happens when my foot is off the accelerator, often turning in a roundabout or to a parking space.

I am wondering about condition and security of earths between the engine and the chassis. Sounds like something being disturbed or broken when under transverse load. So I would suggest starting with thoroughly working through all of those.
If they're ok, then check security and condition of all the main harness and plugs going to the engine (it will only be something common, not something like a single injector plug)

Thank you Wurlycourner for your interest : )

I am used to electronics having started in radio & TV repairs way back in 1961 ; 0

Is it OK to disconnect the battery, then unplug the various plugs and fuses on the main engine compartment fuse box, and the one in the passenger glove box ?

I am asking because of the computers in the car : )

Before disconnecting the battery, make sure you follow this procedure for battery disconnection and reconnection Spiff. It will ensure that the car's networked ECUs are properly closed and restarted.

Be VERY careful of the one in the passenger glovebox - that is the BSI and is the main controller for all the other ECUs.. I would not disturb it unless absolutely necessary. It does have several fuse holders there too. The BSI is expensive to replace and is very sensitive.

Battery Disconnection:
  • Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off.
  • Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition.
  • Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery.
Battery Reconnection:
  • Ensure all doors and tailgate is closed.
  • Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 3 minutes (do not open any doors).
  • Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.
  • Switch on the ignition only and check system's functionality (don't start the car).
  • Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.
  • Remove key from the ignition and test the central locking system.
  • Now open the car door and start the engine and complete the system's check.
  • Failure to follow this procedure could result in incorrect operation of many BSI related items.
