Locking Wheel Bolt Removal

Post by James Green »

Hi, i can not seem to undo my Citroen Picasso locking wheel bolts as the pins have fallen out of the key. I have called around a few garages and everywhere does not seem to want to help as apparently the Citroen/Peugeot locking wheel bolts are the hardest to be able to remove.
Does anyone know how i can take them off as i have a flat tyre and can not fit my spare wheel on?

Thanks in advance.

Go to a good tyre shop they have a tool (brutal) :)

I had my last C5 with a similar problem, the tyre boys had all four off in less than ten minutes.

Replace them with proper bolts unless your wheels are very special.

Alternatively.

Thanks for your reply. I have spoken to a local tyre shop who said they can give it a go if i bring the vehicle down, but because of my puncture i'm unable to drive it there. I was hoping for a mobile service or DIY solution.

If the puncture is not a serious one and you have a tyre inflater what about pumping it up and try and get to the fitter if not too far.

Then you''ll have to try and look for a mobile fitter in your area - as you've said that will be the best option - if they were that easy to steal normally without the key, there wouldn't be much point in fitting them to be honest. :-D

I have just come across this locking wheel bolt removal specialist http://www.lockingwheelnutremovers.co.uk He said he deals with these bolts all the time and said he can come out to me and take them all off. He's on his way now so i'll let you know how it goes.
I don't think ill be putting locking wheel nuts back on after this. I think i'll just stick to standard bolts all round.

If this is a chap in a 4x4 with a big hammer and a mystery tool, I used him to take the lockers off my Citroen C4 a couple of years ago. The website looked familiar..

He had all 4 off in less than 5 mins.

I had similar issue with a friends Nissan note, was doing him a favour to get four new tyres fitted at my friends garage, whilst I was waiting I thought I'd help and undo the bolts the first locking bolt snapped almost half of the locking nut key, after 3 deep sockets split and 30 minutes later I had four new tyres. HE used a 4" socket and used a sledge hammer to wack it on and untighten the locking nuts..

I had the same problem with my C5. The Tyre Fitter said that the pins had all broken on the special nut so couldn't get the wheel off. He said he could try to get it off if I liked. Being stuck I said OK. He tried to get the bolt out and broke it in half. I had to go to a local welding shop where the guy welded a nut onto the end of the broken bolt and removed it. I replaced the broken bolt with a plain wheel bolt that I had brought along to replace the broken special bolt. Job done. However this left me with three wheels that I couldn't get off without paying a small fortune for a new key. After a bit of head scratching and fumbling in the junk box that everybody has I sorted the problem. I found some 4 mm stainless steel rod in the box. I cut 4 pieces the correct length and glued them in place of the broken pins in the bolt key, jammed it on the wheel bolt and with a little persuasion the bolt sailed out. Did the same with the other two and replaced them all with plain wheel bolts. The key ended up in the nearest bin. As the C5 has a cap over the wheel bolts nobody knows that they are not locked, so anyone likely to take a fancy to the wheels doesn't know.
