I found soot all over the back of my engine under the air filter. I was also experiencing fumes in the cabin occasionally, usually when stationary.
Discovered the clamp between EGR and EGR cooler was loose. Tightened it up and no more cabin smells.

I'm off work tomorrow so I'm going to try both of these suggestions, i.e. disconnecting the cat from the turbo to see if there's any change and if not I'll check the EGR and pipe for leaks.

Thanks for the suggestions

So I decided to start around the back of the engine today and my first discovery was the EGR valve wasn't fully tightened to the head. The next discovery was even better though, the EGR cooler had snapped right the way around the clamp so between a slight leak when closed it was fully leaking when open, that totally explains the fumes in the cabin and the exhaust leak noise on light throttle that I couldn't figure out.. I've sourced a second hand cooler but waiting for gasket and new clamps before I fit it.
I'm not sure if this will be the cause of all the trouble codes but I guess I'll find out when I fit the new cooler.

Big thanks to Mike T for suggesting to check the EGR valve.

I also found a broken splitter on the main vacuum line but cannot for the life of me find the pipe that's supposed to be connected there!

I have now fitted the replacement EGR cooler and EGR gasket and the car drives amazing again, what a difference!

The story is not over however, I'm getting EGR fault codes now.
P2143 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vent Control Circuit / Open
P0405 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit Low

I suspect it's something to do with the dodgy wiring I found and reinsulated (that's where I'm going to start) or whatever should be connected to the snapped "t" connector on the vacuum line that I still haven't been able to find.

Still at least the car drives well now, I'll have a few days off lol

I thought I'd have a quick check on the wiring today and found that I'd forgot to connect the EGR when I last had it apart doh! Plugged it back in, cleared the codes and after over 100 miles tonight no codes have returned. I think I can call it fixed!
I'd like to thank everyone for their input and help and I hope this thread can help someone else👍
