C5 X7 tyre pressure sensors

Post by Y Cymro »

There’s an air leak in one of the the TPMS wheel sensors on my 2013 C5 Tourer X7. It takes a couple of weeks for sufficient air to leak to illuminate the low tyre pressure warning system. When washing the wheels I can see a few air bubbles around the valve stem, signifying the leak.

Do I have to buy a Citroen replacement TPMS sensor complete, or is there a quality after market equivalent that would be suitable. I’ve seen just the valve stem, washer seal and valve core available for £5 or less, including one kit on eBay,which quotes a Citroen part number. Have you tried these, and are they suitable?

You don’t need a new sensor, just the valve kit. These are a few quid frim Citroen and on tyres with factory fitted TPMS, you should replace the valve kit when this starts to happen. I have a front one doing the same. I just keep topping it up until I get the fronts done and then will get the valve kit x2 and replace them both.

The part should be
16 120 931 80

They are £5.14 per valve. Item 2 in the diagram.

They just need the screw undoing from inside the tyre on the sensor that secures it, so shouldn’t be a problem.

That's a useful bit of info, Marc - and presumably this means you don't need the exciter and Lexia to get the system to recognise the new valve? I've got these on my new 3008, so bound to come up at some point!

Not to my knowlege Richard, they should only need programming once, but the valve part should be replaced every few tyre changes really, when you consider that on non-TPMS systems the valves are replaced every tyre change.

I’ve not had mine done yet since ownership, so can’t knock them considering I’ve had at least 8 to sets of fronts so far!

If your 3008 is pretty new (4 - 5 years old or younger) then you may not have TPMS valves at all. Our 2015 308 and later versions of the C5 (about 2014 I think when the touchscreen was fitted) use ordinary valves. They rely upon detecting a differential in speed between the tyres indicating one is going flat and uses the ABS system.

You can tell if you have this type by simply seeing if the valves are simple flexible ones rather than rigid bolted in types.

All C5 X7s (with the appropriate trim level) had the physical sensors up to the end of production just past 2016.

This is one place that thinks they weren't fitted after 2013.. I'm still trying to find the listing where it gives more information.

I have them listed in the 2016 brochure for Australia and the 2014 UK brochure where the Mirror Screen (touchscreen) system was available. I doubt they would change the X7 specification at that late stage for things like the TPMS when it is perfectly operational TBH Paul. It would probably be more work to introduce new software / programming to the ESP / ABS system and all the other related stuff.

I know they now have the cheaper system fitted now as it is an EU requirement for these, no doubt part of cost cutting measures.

Perhaps bear in mind that the screw is a tiny, tiny, tiny Torx thing.
I've never met a tyre fitter that has anything to fit so take a set of precision Torx drivers along with you when the time comes.

I still can't find where I got this info from. Unfortunately the pen-drive I stored all this kind of stuff on curled up its toes last Sunday!

EDIT. Another thought - what exactly does the 2014 catalogue say? Does it explicitly say that TPMS valves are fitted or that a TPMS system is fitted perhaps?

It's in the options - exactly as the previous brochures and mentions "Tyre Pressure Sensors". I have also checked on a later engine from Citroen Service and the sensors are still there. Another reason why personally, I don't pay any attention to third party data as they have to get this from PSA anyway and I would rather get it first hand wherever possible.

Mine is late 2013 Mk1 - looks like they went to the ABS based system on the MK2 a few months after mine!

And there are zero parts listed / available under TPMS on the later versions of the 3008. There seems a requirement for this new system to be reset every time you inflate the tyres. On the C4GP there is a TPMS menu to reset the system once the tyre pressures have been checked (done via the touchscreen) and on some other Peugeots there is a physical button that has to be held down to switch the under inflation warning light off from the dash looking at these 2 vids:
