Xantia Estate rear arch a little gone..

Post by Timmo »

Decided to have a look at the rear arch on the veg burner today, something been meaning to do for ages, has been slowly getting worse, year by year to the point it doesnt have a lot of stregth left now at the back of the arch.
Is it worth patching? Welding something in? Or is it more a case of protect it (rust penetrator on it at the mo) and go for the rat look a little more /tape over come mot time??

really depends on a number of things
How keen are you to do it?
Do you have the time & equipment to do it yourself?
Do you have the money to pay someone else to do it?
Do you have a source for a good replacement wing?
Are you keen to extend its life as long as possible, or is it reasonably 'Disposable'?

With that amount of visible rot, I think I'd be a bit concerned that the underside is a veritable pin-cushion. If you've seen my 'Welding Blog' I had very little visible rust..... but yours ain't necessarily that bad

Also bear in mind that in my experience, getting a match to a metallic with a Rattle Can is just about impossible and the simplest 'Scratch Touch Up' can make your car look 100x worse than it did when you started.

Am kinda a keen to do so, have welder and some sheet metal, would likely patch from the inside, tack into place, etc, painting isnt a problem, have compressor and spray gun from bike refurbs, replacement wing, not really, weve a few good local yards but xantias dont turn up very often! Not the fuinds to pay someone for it but equally not disposable as such, mechanically is fine, just the bodywork letting it down! 😜
Underneath is pretty good, the sills have been patched but not the underside in our ownership (6years),
Has gone where the panels are lined/double skinned, also due to the place and angle it parks at on the drive, this side is lowest, a job i shpuld have done 3+years ago! But to cpin a phrase from a good buddy, was a Round Too it (tuit)!

Ah the Round Tuit, popular tat when I were a boy, not seen one in a good few years.

One of my favourite phrases heard from a mate is 'The trouble with commonsense is it ain't that common'
