CHF11S fluid/LDS

Post by faddy »

ECP sell a Triple QX branded hydraulic fluid designated CHF11S which is stated to meet "PSA S712710 (LDS)". Does this mean more generally that any brand of CHF11S fluid (the CHF bit apparently standing for Central Hydraulic Fluid) is interchangeable with LDS?

I have seen other manufacturers claim LDS compatibility but why chance it? Total LDS is the proper stuff so I wouldn't entertain a 'general purpose' replacement.

Comma do an actual LDS if you're looking to compare prices: https://www.commaoil.com/commercial-veh ... /567/LDS1L

But what is "proper" LDS? On ebay there are several brands besides Total and Comma. Is LDS a label any manufacturer can use for a product that meets PSA S712710? Do Citroen police or license its use? The main thing putting me off the ECP product here, apart from the illustration being for a different product, is that it's green - with scope for future confusion.

The Comma stuff is green too.
I did use it in an emergency - fractured suspension pipe, but it was then replaced by 'proper' Total LDS.

Green! I would be suspicious of green being confused with LHM, but that may be just a dye. I never compromise on the Suspension and steering fluid, always using Total.

Total was the original supplier to PSA and the other companies have manufacturers their own versions. Minimum specifications are one thing, but not all oils are the same even with the same specs- just look at engine oils.

The Comma stuff I bought and put in today was orange/red (but looked pretty much black once sitting in the basket in the tank filling hole)

I seriously hope the labelling machine operator wasn't having a bad day!

I have my suspicions about the oils industry... all datasheets have statements such as "all specifications subject to slight change during production" or something like that. Basically as long as is 'somewhat close' spec wise, they just bottle it up and flog it on. Well. that's my suspicion anyway.

That's why I'd stick with Total for LDS, as it was probably developed in their labs on behalf of Citroen.

Yes I would too especially for something as critical as LDS, given how costly parts are for the suspension system as I’ve just found having replaced a front strut

Exactly!

Looking at the farm machinery and diggers we have, they all have huge tanks of hydraulic oil, I'm assuming it's all mineral even though it is under more stress than the C5 suspension. Although the C5 would probably work fine on normal hydraulic oil, Citroen insist on a fully synthetic oil probably because it never wears and could legitimately claim to be a 'sealed for life' system.

A mate of mine used to work for one of the major online / high street sellers of car parts for european cars - even he wouldn't touch their own brand oil, his reasoning being that you can only manufacture good quality oil down to a certain price, any lower then it can't really be good quality oil. Personally, I take any certification and claimed standards used by 'lesser' oil manufacturers / suppliers with a pinch of salt - you only have to look at the shocking Grenfell debacle to see what certification, standards, and compliance are capable of.

^ I can imagine that's true. I read somewhere that cheap oil can actually be sourced from recycled oil sources which is pretty concerning.

Personally I prefer buying oils from companies that also operate refineries, that way you've got a better chance of them making to the correct spec by design rather than by blending other base oils to get a 'close enough' product. Of course, I could be completely wrong, but that is my gut feeling on the matter.

Blenders would no doubt argue that not being a refiner means that they are free to buy base oils from the best source.

Best source - that's the bit that worries me. 'Best', to me, doesn't mean cheapest :(
