Try running a lead from the battery+ and touching it on the small terminal of the starter (6) if the starter turns OK the fault is in the ignition system, if not its the starter or wiring to.

Thanks Marc, its going to auto electrician tomorrow night so he van test on Wednesday morning with fault present, working in dark otherwise. Will update once I have news. Might not be until weekend tjough, as I'm away from Weds night til Friday.

The 1.6 HDi starters seem to be a bit weak, and eventually start to fail to turn when energised. The one on my 307 was like that, worse when it was hot. It usually went after a few tries - most I ever had was about 10 goes to get it to crank. Changing it, however :rofl2: I had 3 goes and failed to get it out. The bottom bolt is easy enough. The top gearbox side bolt is only visible with a mirror, but not too hard to undo with a wobble bar. The nut on the cable bracket is not visible, but can be undone by feel from underneath. The top engine side bolt is :twisted: you can just touch it over the starter, it is in no way visible. There is not enough room to get on it directly due to the wiring duct that runs down right over the starter. There is just about enough room to slide in an extension with the appropriate (allen) bit on the end, but it needs to be exactly the right length to put the ratchet head just at the rear of the solenoid, otherwise it fouls on the wiring again. I didn't have the right length extension so failed. I had found at the end that there was just enough room to reach in past the exhaust over the subframe to put your hand nearly in the right place to guide the bit into the bolt, but you need long arms to operate the ratchet as well!!

That sounds like s garage job to me Richard, they hsve tje lift, the tools and the experience, so if it turns out to be the starter, will get my garage to do it

This morning I could hear a faint clunk when key turned, put it in reverse let handbrake ofc and it rolled back a couple of inches turning engine slightly in the process. Turned key again and it started.

Sounds like either a weak starter or weak battery. Check the battery voltage with the starter turning, should be 9 volts+.

Battery has beem checked its definitely starter related.

UPDATE. Van was left at auto electrician last night, checked out this morning, and it is the under bonnet fuse box that’s at fault. A common problem apparently.

Fuse box itself, has corrosion in it delamination of board..
part no 9666700280 anyone got one?

Rich, I would be a bit wary over that fuse box - I'm wondering if it is the right one as that part number does not come up at all for your VIN - and is not shown as any of the parts for that vehicle! I'm wondering if an incorrect fuse box has been sourced before??

Confusingly the early fuse boxes have a different number on them than the Citroen part number (which is not on the board anywhere!). If you buy a S/H one, then best to go off the number that is actually on the board. Unfortunately that is one of the expensive ones at nearly £220 so SH is going to be your friend I think. Looks in those links that the later one does have the same number on it as the Cit part number....!

Marc, I was going to ask that, the local Citroen dealer said the same, that part number does not correspond to anything, they also quoted the part number you have. All the fuse boxes look the same, exactly, dare I get one bearing a different number or not? None of the breakers I have tried have any , been on parts gateway, breaker link, and others, no one has any. I would be most obliged if someone could give me contact details for Pug?Citroen breakers in their area, can always ask them to post if the right number comes up. My local French breaker told me the part number should begin 96, but the dealer said the one ending 680
