The real answer if you are as poor as me 8-[ is to run a non cat car. Early Peugeot's using the 8 valve Hdi don't have one and are also very reliable. There are still quite a few 406's about which ran until 2004 and in my opinion the best buy on the secondhand market. If you want something smaller there are also the 206's which use the non intercooled version which I believe ran up until about 2009 and use the same engine, there may be others that use it that I have missed.

While I agree in principle that the DPF shouldn't be removed if the result is increased particulate emission, if zero smoke is emitted by a vehicle whose DPF has been removed, as required by the new MOT, it shouldn't really matter - the outcome is the same. I'm assuming that by 'smoke' they mean any particulates, whether visible or not.

from what I understand, the "smoke test" equipment will be upgraded in MoT garages to increase the level of accuracy demanded. At the moment it is quite low-grade kit.

I still think the government should legislate to make it illegal to permanently remove emissions equipment (except for replacing / repairing it obviously), then there would be no grey areas and no misperception on behalf of the public.

It's pathetic, as all 'AT' have done in response to the ASA requirement is to change the advert to include the illegality of it right at the bottom as they recommended - not very prominent to me.

Advertising Standards Ruling

The Ad that 'AT' are now Using - And then undermining the requirement by saying it might not apply to you!! - Ridiculous.

I am happy with their add, it makes it clear that it is for "off road use", there are a lot of exclusive race/track/trials cars that this is suited for.

Action should be taken against them if the car worked on by them can be proven to be obviously NOT such a machine.

Whilst the system is happy to take money from people in VAST amounts for going at 75mph on a dry empty motorway because it is "unsafe" then one wonders about balance.

I agree, they are now following the recommendation - but not the spirit - the ad is intended for Joe public and clearly aimed at normal road users - little has changed from the original apart from the asterisked part at the bottom - I mean really - how many people have their Diesel cars converted for off-road use ???? Diesel?

That article sounded more like a hope and a prayer which urged me to seek some facts...
