Help With Central Dashboard Controls ?

Post by spiff »

Good evening gentlemen while we await a replacement power steering pump : )

Despite many searches on line I cannot find the purpose of the controls in the two attached images.

We have tried pressing them but no luck : )

Any help would be appreciated : )

I take it the car is missing its owners manual? (Normally stored in a drawer under the front of the front passenger seat)

First image, top right locks and unlocks all doors/boot on the car
First image, bottom button switches the heated rear windscreen on (it auto times off after a while)
Bottom image, button switches the ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) on/off. This is a system that trying to keep the car going in the direction you want it to;

On the central console (to the right of the radio) the padlock button is for the central locking. Pressing it locks/unlocks the car. If (when the ignition is on) you press the button for several seconds it will then toggle the automatic locking function (where the car will lock once the speed goes over 10MPH, IIRC).

The ECO button prevents the air conditioning from being used (as it can take up to 10% of the engine power to spin the A/C compressor), while the Auto button allows the car full control of the cooling/heating systems.

Thank you both so much : )

We owned a Xantia for 18 years until last July when the cam belt broke, in the interim period I had take little interest in cars.

We had no idea how involved they had become since 2000.

I can now understand the progression to self drive cars, not that I find it a sensible idea on present roads.

I feet it is pushing thing way too far without a system built into the roads for the vehicles to follow, and becons in the cars to tell each other where they are ?

But even that is not going to help people like the lady pushing her bike across the road that was killed by one.

One last request, the top picture top left button that looks like a TV contrast control emblem of years gone by ?

According to the old handbook I have here that's for:
  • Night driving Control
  • Anti-intrusion alarm
  • Tailgate unlocking control
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the hell happened.

It only does one of those three and has different images on the front dependant on which one it does.
That image must be the night driving control (think that turns some of the dash lights off, like the saab night mode).

On my estate, that button is for tailgate unlocking (has an image of a boot opening) although in the last couple of weeks, it has randomly changed function and does night mode :rofl2:

Thank you all again.

It is I think going to be the night driving control.

My Dads Ford 8 did not even have a heater, or any hydraulics for that mater.

The wipers worked off a vacuum, that was until the car climbed a hill when they stopped : )

We will have some more things to play with once the steering pump arrives.

It was leaking from the pump which has now started making a loud squeaking noise, so it is staying in the garage ontil the part arrives.
