citroen dispatch 2.ol hdi 2007 mk2?

Post by dandyman1 »

Please tell me why do the glow plugs appear to be at the back of the engine and not the front like normal vans?

How are you supposed to change them?

I do have a defective one and want to change them. please help.

Er on the 2.0hdi engine fitted to every other Citroen the glow plugs are at the front, the Berlingo, Relay they are at the front. Are you saying in the dispatch they flipped it round so the turbo is at at the front and the gearbox is on the right. Are you sure your engine is not a 1.6hdi?

thats right, thanks marc. they are a nightmare! down the bloody back. can only just see them from underneath when on ramps. its a full arms Utrecht with next to no room. plus i think you need to take off all the egr assembly as it is positioned over the top of the plugs and u have no access ..

No problems chaps - that's the same as the C5 with the DW10BTED4 - it needs EGR exchanger and the EGR Solenoid Valve removing to get to them!

Jesus diesels are getting so complicated and in some cases difficult to work on you can understand the rise in petrol vehicles. I do understand vans are a different case and with the mileage some do diesel is the best option.

If the EML is not on, then I wouldn't bother. Odds on it will break off trying to get it out, which will entail removing the head to drill it out....

Engine Malfunction Light - usually an orange warning lamp in the shape of an engine on the dashboard.

Richard’s basically saying if there isn’t a specific need to change them, don’t. The tips can break off and cause more problems. So leave them if there is no specific reason to replace them.

I understand. I thought this too. I am defiantly only starting on three. One is dead! so i get white smoke on start up and it runs lumpy causing strain in the aux belt and vibrating the pulley tension bearing which i have replaced once already. I bought the plugs before realising how hard they were to change! maybe i will have to live with it and keep them in the spares department of my garage..

Thanks Marc. you have been very supportive. and to be honest i needed it.

I am just putting this as a pointer for anyone else on the look out for advice in this thread!
I am aware that it is easy to snap off glow plugs in the head causing a right nightmare!

Where possible try using some WD /light oil on the plugs in advance. as long as possible to aide removal..
Run the engine until it is hot before trying to remove plugs.. (dont burn your self)!
Use a torque wrench to remove the glow plugs. you will need to find out the breaking point of the plugs and set the wrench below.
maybe use some additional heat if they are stubborn and spray with wd40 or something like to have a rappid heat change upon them..(can break the seal/rust ect between the threads. Sometime with sticking bolts nuts etc i have noticed you can free them up by tightening them a tad first..?
Above all be patient and dont force them. spray them again and leave them longer if needed. If all does fail there is ways of repairing but you really dont want to go there!

Members put me right on anything please!
Hope this helps someone. Do look at anyone's response. They may have a better idea!

The tightening trick can work really well (especially if there is any rust involved). If you just try to loosen a threaded object with rust on it the rust can act as a wedge, jamming in the threads. If you tighten it slightly first the rust can fall away (and, if you have a wire brush, that can help clear the rust), and then this should not get in the way as you undo the object.

No probs - but with the HDi engines the starting is really accomplished by the compression - the plugs only really help with pre-heating in very cold conditions and are used to help get the engine to temperature more quickly in the early stages and for regeneration cycles - but you don't have a particulate filter to worry about there. :-D
