C4gp not starting

Post by bigbill00 »

Hi have a 2008 c4gp 1.6hdi
The car won't turn over it was running fine I stopped to go in a shop come out and nothing
Battery fine only 6mth old
Fuse fine
Engine earth fine
Ran diagnostic which came up with
Absence of start signal to starter
Car will push start and run fine
Question is
Where else to check am going to direct feed starter to check if the starter or soleniod is broke
If not what else can I check in the starting system
Many thanks for any help

Welcome!

Are you sure it hasn't blown the fuse on the underbonnet fuse box? Started off life as a 20A, but many have been replaced with 25A as they keep blowing when the starters get a bit older. Access to the starter is 'interesting' on this engine!

Yes cheched fuse f8 25amp all ok
And as you say access not great I could even see it with air box and fuel filter out
Went to get under but couldn't lift it high enough
And can't believe your supposed to lift and put axle stands in the same place
Waiting to get it into a friend garage on ramps
Then as I said direct feed on starter and work from there

What diagnostics have you got? If you've got a lexia, then you should be able to see the start request when you turn the key to start (there is no physical link between the key and the starter - it's done via the computer!) - you can probably try and start it from the Lexia in fact. You could check to see if you are getting 12V on the appropriate wire out of the underbonnet fuse box.... but I don't know which one it is!

You can jack under the sill, then remove the wheel and put a stand under the subframe.

It appears to be pin 2 on a 5 pin yellow connector on the fuse box. There's a relay in the fuse box - you should be able to hear this click when you go to crank - if not, then the problem is somewhere upstream in the electronics (although there does appear to be a direct connection from the ignition switch to the BSI).

Cheers for the info
I do hear a rely click when turning the key I assumed that was for the fuel pump
But if that is the ignition relay thinking it is either the feed from relay to starter or soliniod
I do have lexia if you know how to see if the start signal is sent would appreciate the information on how to see this thanks

Was a dead starter motor
Said it was a pig of a job
They released the engine mounts to aid removal and fitment

Nothing is easy on a GP,even simple jobs are made as difficult as possible through ridiculous design and i'm seriously thinking about selling mine and getting something from the early 90's that i can actually work on myself or even an 80's classic would be nice.

Know exactly what you mean
I have lost all faith in this car every time I fix it something else goes tits up
I am fixing it now to sell or swap don't even care if I lose on the deal as long as i have faith in it

I find you have to bite the bullet before you start and remove as much as possible to make the job easier.

I don't know that you can, but given that it's a computerised function, it entirely possible that under activator tests (or whatever they are called) there will be one for starter motor....

I don't think this is possible - actuator tests for things like the door locks / windows and audio control buttons can all be done as examples, but as for physically starting the car, I suspect that this operation will still require the key to be turned and any immobiliser functions to be carried out as normal. But I would be happy to be proved wrong.
