I like my cassettes...

Just bought a whole load of NOS C60 cassettes still in their shrink-wrap for a very small outlay...

I read recently that cassettes are enjoying a revival.

I was always impressed with how much abuse they'd tolerate (although wouldn't survive contact with brake fluid)

Yes, indeed and they last well too... I have some that I had a a kid and they're getting on for 50 years old now... They still work perfectly...

Not much survives a dunking in brake fluid!

Rubber seals?!

I've got one I found in the road (somewhere in the Hebrides, I think) which, with a bit of fettling worked OK; there's about a foot of it that was badly mangled, so there is a bit of one track that's - distorted? But, hey, it's Def Leppard - so who's to know?

Why? Why do people insist on buying old tech? It must be nostalgia, because it's certainly NOT better. It just isn't! I get the idea that in a show car you might want originality or factory spec, but... if it's for you to actually use...?

Good point... I like old stuff... One of my big passions is vintage wireless and audio... Cassettes neatly fit into this passion...

Agree, old "tech" is "old"
If it is improved then why not dump the old kit, car audio is one example where it has massively advanced. I really could not be bothered going for a long drive and have to mess about with cassette tapes or CD loading. As for storing them, putting them into boxes etc, no thanks.

I also like old stuff, it doesn't mean it's better than modern stuff though :)

Because it was OEM equipment, aesthetically fits in and 'belongs with the car'. Having a glitter ball, disco light emitting stereo half sticking out the dash doesn't float my boat and can ruin the classic look of the interior if you don't get a subtle replacement. :-D

Agree with the disco ball thing, "get a subtle replacement" is the key IMHO.

Cracking - had a good crease up at that - although having half the cassette of 'The Brady Bunch' sticking out is probably a dead giveaway :rofl2:

Think we got a winner. The car has been out of use a long time, it was my bro in laws but was working well when the engine failed. We will be able to test it before removing from car assuming we can find a cassette.

That looks like it, Ken. Thanks for pursuing it.
Paper label on it will say Philips 22 DC 594/xxx.
Not too worried about cassette operation, so long as it powers up and radio side works. Will also use it to control CD autochanger, but that may not be fitted to the car there.

A guy called Campaigner has also flagged up a to-be-scrapped estate in Wakefield, so I guess it's the same car.

Fingers crossed. Let me now.
