Suspension fluid.

Post by milleplod »

Thought I'd check my fluid level today on my '09 plate Exclusive as I was at my mum's - she's got a nice, level drive! :) Suspension set to low, left it for 5 or 10 mins, cap off -

Il n'y a rien!

Presumably a leak somewhere then! I was only under the car a few weeks ago (I say 'I', a mate was) and all seemed bone dry. There are no drips on the drive anywhere - am I right in thinking that it could be a small enough leak for it not to be obvious where its coming from?! Any pointers as to a 'favourite' spot for the leak? I'm taking it back to him tomorrow for a thorough look.

The fluid reservoir has a 'Total LDS' sticker on it. In the absence of any useful info in the handbook, I assume that its a factory sticker and that's what I need to buy?

Correct Pete - LDS.

Have a hunt arround, but there is a discount code for members from Nielson Oils - see my post here:

To bleed after filling to between the A & B levels shown, keep suspension on low, start engine and turn the steering wheel full lock left to right a few times, then re-check levels again.

First two places to look : Front suspension legs - it'll be obvious if one is leaking as it'll be wet on the outside nearer the top. Steering rack - you'll need a torch to peer through the drivers wheel and/or wheel arch and you're looking where the steering column joins the rack. Alternatively, you might find a drip on your driveway in due course !
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

I picked up a litre of LDS today, after my mate spent a while under the car looking for a leak - he couldn't find anything at all! :? Prior to topping up, I checked the level again - strangely, this time you could see fluid in the bottom of the reservoir neck, although it took about 200ml to bring it up to level.

I'll be monitoring it, as they say! :)

Confused, I think Marc! :-D

I suppose, if its a really, really, tiny little leak, it could've lost 200ml over a long period of time, but I expected there to be some trace somewhere of where its leaked from! :? Ah well, I've put a weekly reminder in my phone to check the level.....we'll see!
