I'm looking at som new used 7"wide rims. (from an Ford Sierra)
How deep offset will fit without clearance issues?
According to https://www.wheel-size.com/size/citroen/c5/2006/ 7Jx17 ET25 are standard. How about ET38 on 7Jx16"?
Would I need space plates? How thick? And longer bolts to?
Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I set out on a day long trip to try them on in hope they will fit

Please be aware that the bolt holes may not be the same distance apart. I nearly came a cropper that way, and it was only because the scrap yard suggested I checked first (I had a wheel off a Renault (same tyre size), trying to fit to a Xantia). When I attempted for fit the wheel in question I could only get one bolt in, and then the other wheel holes did not line up on the hub holes.

The PCD from a Sierra wheel at 4x108 is the same as a C5. However, the centre bore is 63.1mm on a Sierra and 65.1mm on the C5, so the wheel centre will need enlarging.

Thanx.. I'm well aware about that and just about everything but the question about how ET /offset my car can handle. How much extra I might have to spend on bolts and spacers? front or/and back?

The C5 I/II never came with 17" diameter or 7" wide wheels.
Original dimensions are:
16x6.5" wheel, 215/55 R16 tyres, ET26
15x6" wheel, 195/65 or 205/60 R15 tyre ET18
Since even the OE 16" wheels with the 215mm tyres are a bit of a squeeze, i highly doubt you will be able to fit them without spacers.
My guess is that you would need at the least 12-15mm spacers to get the ET low enough.
And if you get some that bolts to the hub witch you then bolt the wheel to, not the "loose" ones with long bolts.
But even the you could end up with clearance issues.. Personally I wouldn't bother.

Correct. "Standard" was the wrong word.. I was aiming to that 7x17" according to the list could be fited.
I will keep on looking for other rims with less offset then ET38.

I had 18" alloys on my 07 plate c5 2.0hdi. If I remember they were et 40, I had 20mm hubcentric spacers fitted with an extended stud conversion which made the fitting much easier. There was absolutely no problems with the fitting with this set up.
