Post by KennyW »

Hi All,

What coolants have people used in their C5's ?

As I'm going to do my timing belt and change the water pump as well.

Recommendations sought.

Hi, I had G33 coolant which was green. Now, after I changed the timing belt I have G12 which is pink. You can use also G12+ or the new G12++

When I found out that my coolant was GREEN (not blue or orange) I replaced it with Total Glacelf auto supra... based purely on the fact that every other fluid in the car is made by Total. I think I bought about 5L of concentrate and have about a litre of 50:50 left should I need to top up in the future.
Remember to open the little air valves (they look like tyre dust caps, one by the bulkhead and one by the thermostat housing) to facilitate draining and again when refilling wait for the new coolant to come out of these holes before closing them up.

And the usual reminder:
Don't mix types (eg long-life OAT and standard), colours (which are quite random), or makes.
Add only more of what is there already, and if unknown, drain completely and refill.

Thanks for the replies,

I think what will be important is flush the system well to clean out any hold coolant and replace with good quality mono ethylene glycol (meg) based coolant/anti freeze at least 90-95% content and a corrosion inhibitor package.

G33 is alkaline ph8.4

OAT coolant
The corresponding BASF products are:
Glysantin® G30® (Glysantin® G33®* Glysantin® G34®*)
which suggests g30 can be used as a alternative to g33 and is readily available.

About 10L. This gives a bit spare for top ups. I got 5L of coolant and 5L of deionised water.
