Citroen C5 diesel estate TPMS Warning

Post by Davidcrofts »

My car keeps showing a red ‘STOP’ in the speed dial and a notice on the screen which says my tyre pressures are too low! The tyres are all ok and think there is a sensor that is malfunctioning. Does anybody know a cure or at least how to isolate this please?

David, I have moved your thread to the Citroen Section (it was in the announcements / Forum Issues area) and have edited the title to make it more specific to your problem.

First off, do you have your VIN number, so we can determine the type and model of the C5 you have.
Also, which tyre does it say is the wrong pressure? - The exact message would help. Depending on the age of your car it may well be that the battery has given out on one of the sensors and need replacing - again the VIN will help.

Marc, the car is a C5 HDI Exclusive estate 2004 Vin number VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

The messages apart from STOP are:
Tyre pressures too low
And
Puncture in tyres detected

Hope this helps

Ok David, so you have a MKI C5. This system is quite different to the subsequent TPMS units fitted.

The Mark I system consists if the Emitter on each wheel, and a High Frequency Receiver that is incorporated into the Steering Wheel Switch Module. This then passes the information received through to the Car's BSI (Main computer) via the car's VANCAR 1 network.

The BSI then compares the values received with pre-programmed limits and will then display one of the following 3 warnings onto the screen:
  • Insifficient Tyre Pressure
  • Punctured Tyre
  • Emitter Module Missing
So the next question is - first, are you sure the tyre pressures are correct?
Have the tyres been changed recently? - Emitter could be damaged when removing / refitting the tyres
Have you noticed anything else strange happening lately, like the headlights turning off randomly, or the dash board lights / electrical accessories turning off and on, or indicators / lights randomly turning on or off?

Any of these can be a sign of a failing Comms Unit (Switch Module). If not, then I suspect one of the emitters needs replacing as the batteries are not replaceable. A Lexia or Diagbox should be able to determine which one needs replacing as it can monitor the signals from each. The emitters for your car are £112.04 inc. VAT as of today from Citroen (as they are an older type of emitter) and the part number is: (5430 02)

There's one here on the bay for £55:

BUT - I would definitely get it diagnosed first before spending out - just to make sure. This part number also includes 3, 5 & 6 - the wheel valve plug, the Valve mechanism and the Seal

Marc, thanks for all that info, however it all looked complicated and expensive. Elsewhere on the net I saw an alternative which I thought I’d give a try. At a garage I let some air out of each tyre then inflated them to the correct pressure - job done warning lights all out.

Great - that can work too - the batteries do last for ages, so keep an eye on it in case it starts happening again - if these are the original sensors - then that's not bad going for 13 years on the same battery! :-D

At least you have the correct part numbers if you need to change any in the future.
